Car got rear ended last night
 

Its not terrible... Fingers crossed that they dont try to total it! Damage may be a little worse than it looks from the outside. The trunk lock cylinder got pushed behind the finish panel. Anyway... Pics

Nope lady pulled over. Got a police report and everything.

1. Let 'em total it if they are willing
2. Buy it back for pennies
3. fix it for cheapies
4. ???
5. Profit!

Yeah but I could also do basically the same thing if they send me a check to get it fixed.... I will fix it myself and wont have to worry about a salvage title

Just make sure you have the car towed and stored at your house. Do not have it taken to any shop, make the adjuster come to your house to check out the damages.

Yup I have it scheduled for them to come to my work. I told them I cannot bring it to a shop because I am still driving it.

... good point. Won't be as much $$ but still. Probably a better plan because salvage title.

I guess I could live with a salvage title... I've been debating with the wife whether or not to sell it next year once we are planning to have a kid... Maybe if I get a salvage title I can convince my wife its smarter for me to keep it because I wont be able to get anything worth while if I try to sell it as a salvage car :giggle:

I think you'll be OK. Last time my Silver car got rear-ended, the damage was much worse and the insurance company fixed it. They do take pre-accident condition into consideration.

I don't know why all you guys sell your miatas because of having kids...My second kid is on the way. Miata useage? 13 second 1/4 mile 29 mpg 2 seater work beater!!!

I don't think you guys realize that letting them salvage it out or not doesn't really depend on you or if you want to keep it.

It simply depends on value vs $$ paid out.

They give you a check big enough, and its salvage title, whether you "buy it back" or not. Its just a matter of them issuing a salvage retention certificate vs taking your title then giving it back to you branded.

*edit: btw that, to me, looks like about $500-900 worth of damage. Had the same thing happen, exactly the same way, on mine right before I painted it. I was actually really happy it happened LOL

Honestly its mostly because of space and money. I don't have anywhere to park a 3rd vehicle and I can't daily a 2 seater with a kid. Also doesn't make sense financially to keep a 3rd car on our insurance and knowing me I would continue to upgrade it and dump money into it. My new dd would be a focus ST so I think I can make that work. I'm sure I could find a way to keep the miata but I just want to be fair to my wife and future family

Once we get out of our townhouse and get into a single family... I will find another! Lol

But I don't want to try to think that far ahead haha just gonna roll with the punches and whatever happens, happens.... If I end up keeping this car for the long haul, I won't complain. I love it !

The reason why Ed recommends slavaging it and then getting the money for it is because you'll get a pretty good deal depending on how much money they are willing to sell it for vs how much money you think you can get out of it when you want to sell it. Depending how old this thing is it may not be half bad since you can just junk it and part out the expensive bits instead of trying to get some of your money back.

Vlad, you're right. But their opinion CAN be swayed by the customer. If it's borderline, you can sway their decision.

Totaling my gray miata and buying it back and fixing it will save me about $6,000 in the end.

What's the reasoning behind this? So you don't incur any fees?
