Car overheating, fans not coming on
2 Attachment(s)
So I got home from the store last night and heard a loud gurgling from the engine bay after shutting my car off. I looked at the gauge and it was overheated (probably boiled off 8-12oz of coolant). I promptly put a box fan over the engine on high to cool down the engine, the car idles fine so I don't think I broke anything however I noticed my cooling fans aren't coming on. At the moment I have both stock fans wired in parallel, starting the A/C fan when the driver-side cooling fan comes on.
I pulled the Diagnostic box and bridged Ground and TFAN to test the relay, and it clicked no issue. The fans didn't come on, however. I applied power to the fans and they both spun up. Beyond this I didn't have much time to troubleshoot, however these were working fine just the other day. Any suggestions? Could it be the multi-wire sensor on the back by the tstat? I already replaced the single-lead cluster gauge sensor. Sensor in question: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1377617573 |
If the relay clicks with the diagnostic box, then my guess is you blew the fuse. The sensor feeds the relay, so if you manually power the relay and nothing happens, then the issue is after the relay. Having both the fans wired together probably overwhelmed the fuse.

^ I'll take that into account and see about figuring out how to fix that (probably a fan conversion in the future). Is the fuse for the fans in the engine bay?

ECU reports a valid temperature reading, Relay clicks when I ground TFAN and the fuse is intact. Fans run when given direct power.. I'm at a loss. I even tried dropping my fan turn on temp to 100*F to see if they would click on. Nothing.

Update (requested via PM) - Issue was a bad ground under the brake booster. Cleaned all of the spade connectors and re-mounted it to the stud under the fender lip on the fender wall where there is a box mounted (strap will share this boxes bracket mounting stud) behind the intake snorkel shown in this picture.
