Which Carbon Hard Top???
Ive looked around for this topic and couldn't find anything about it so here is my question
I want a Carbon Hard top and I found tops from $1300 to $3000 and weights ranging from 10 lbs to 16 lbs. I want to see if anyone like any particular type of Carbon Hard Top, with its weight, quality of fitment/leakage they would choose. |
Oem.

1993ka24det, is it your intention to use this on a daily-driver, or is this a trackday car?
|
Mine is an axis power racing top. I have/had some issues with it (seal around the bottom, cracking window X2, where the two sides were bonded there is a visible line on the outside) but it is very light (dry carbon w/ honey combing in between the layers) and serves its purpose.

chaser has tops as well. but theyve had some mixed reviews.

it will be a DD and hit the track every few months

OEM.
Seriously, most of the aftermarket carbon tops are huge pieces of shit. The weight saving is nearly nonexistent. |
so you'd rather pay 3k for a P0S that has issues for the measly 6lb weight savings?
OEM FTW |
I debated on getting a cf hardtop for a longg time before I ended up just getting my OEM one.
18psi is right, the cost to weight savings ratio isn't worth it. Unless you just want to be able to say you have a cf top, its def not worth it. +1 for OEM hardtops. |
I love the look of the Carbon Kevlar Hardtop, but the fact is there is way too much work involved (getting glass for it, weatherstripping) and from what I've ready, the fitment isnt as good as OEM and leaks. I'd stay OEM. Hell, get a CF wrap if you like the look, and save youself a few grand.

butttt, my understanding is not all fit correcty. if you go through them, make sure they test fit one before they send it to you. cause you may not ever hear from them again if you try and send it back...:sad2: |

I have never seen any aftermarket top, carbon-fiber or otherwise, which fit as well as an OEM top. I have also never seen any cheap, aftermarket carbon-fiber body part which wasn't faded and flaking after a few years' daily exposure to the elements. |
How much does the OEM top weigh with rear glass by the way? I'm sure it is posted somewhere, but it could be re-stated here in a thread that could use that info...
And as astroboy, I have an Axis Power Racing for mine... Fitment isn't direct bolt-up, but then again, mine is for a track-only car, so who cares really. |
I can singlehandly remove my OEM top without issue. But I'm fucking jacked. Who else can do this?

I've taken my top off and put it back on myself since I got the hardtop. If you need 2 people to do this you're either a) old as fuck or b) weak as fuck.

Anyone know the weight fo sho on it though?

I can pull mine and check it on my shipping scale once I get to the shop. |

Taken from M.net:
"The top weighs between 40lbs and 50lbs, depending on model year. My 2003 Mazda hardtop (which has both the defroster and headliner) weighs 50.5lbs." Seems about right to me, although I have never put it on a scale. |

ftfy. The answer is always tomorrow.
Heavy rain in the forecast for tomorrow, so I'll be staying home. When I go back down to the shop on Thursday though I'll make sure I put it on the scale. 50lbs sounds about right if I had to guess (OEM top with headliner). |
