Just a few questions:
First, are those the circlips pictured above the ring gear bolts?
second, it has 11 pinion gear and 43 ring gear teeth, thats 3.9/1.0 ratio right?
finally, i want to open it up and inspect the clutch disks, do I need to worry about gears flying or anything?

those are not circlips... circlips are not a complete circle... hence how they clip.

Those rings are the bearing adjuster rings. They screw into the, well, the bearing holes from the outside.

as for taking it apart, there wont be anything falling apart but there are parts that go in a certain orientation and may be hard to realign. Just make sure you stack them up on your workbench in the same order they were installed.

only yours wont have quite so many plates.

I hope you know which outer race goes to what bearing. You DO NOT want those to get mixed up. Find the RX-7 FSM online and it will show you step by step how to take apart and check the clutches and properly put it back together.

are you going to use the 3.909 ring and pinon or keep your existing one?

see here for rx7 diagram: http://www.mazdamotorsports.com/wcsc...Drivetrain.pdf

yours will have 4 discs per side, for a total of 8, 86-88s will have 6 per side, for a total of 12 discs.

karter, I'd wouldn't bother even re-using the rx7 sleeves and adjusters anyways.

Well, i am not sure at this point which gearing I want to use, but im leaning slightly in favor of the 3.909 so that I will have slightly longer gears. Eventually I will be running much more power and that extra milisecond of time in first gear could make all the difference.

Ok so Im going to be ordering some OEM Circlips for the rx7. Will I need any speciality tools besides the standard wratchet set/torque wrench .. i.e that bearing adjuster looks like it needs special equipment.

Braineack 03-01-2007 08:23 AM

if you aren't setting up the pinon length and backlash yourself then no special tools.

y8s 03-01-2007 11:47 AM

always set backlash if you have the diff out. always. dial indicator and some way to measure 7-7.5" accurately.

but you dont need special tools for the adjusters. those things spin pretty freely so you can use fingers or a screwdriver to tap it around.
