Checking timing... with cops?

I got my car put back together today, cranked it up, pulled out the timing light, then... realized I don't have any spark plug wires. How are you supposed to set the base timing without spark plug wires? Anybody run into this before?

I don't have cops, but why not just pull one of the coils out, and run a plug wire between the coil and plug?

I've heard that you can just put the pick-up over the wire bundle and it will be "close enough."

Correcto, the light will still pick up the pulse from the trigger wire.

x3- that is how you do it on the 90-96 300zx, which has stock COP ignition. Obviously you want to just put it around the harness going to #1.

Realy hmm i was wondering about this myself. Does it matter if you have a bad ass timming light with a super inductive pickup or will most cheapo's work just fine.

Well, I feel like a moron now. My cheap timing light works perfect clipped over the cop wires. :noob:

my harness is too tight to get the thingy on the thingy :(

Clamping onto the #1 COP Vcc or GND wire (much preferably not both together) will work, sometimes just sitting the clamp on top of the COP works.
