Clucking miata (hidden chicken!)
 

Hello all,

I've been chasing this unusual squealing sound for awhile now. I called it a chicken sound because from the cabin it sounds like it but anyways I've spoken to two mechanics for their take of what it could be. I still haven't come up with an answer so hopefully someone on here has a suggestion on what I should look at. Initially I thought the sound was coming from the front passenger side wheel well but after further listening it seems to be coming from the rear half of the car, it is definitely more noticeable from the passenger side. (I have completely knocked out the engine bay and the front wheel Wells now!) When standing on the outside of the car people tell me it coming from the rear passenger wheel. But when I stand outside I don't hear it from the wheels but more from the middle and under the car.
For background on the car it's a 1992 N/A miata and the things that have been changed since I've owned it are:
Front Brake pads
Front Rotors
Clutch hydraulics (master and slave)
Front sway bar end links
Megasquirt
Wide band
The sound has been going on since I've owned it and has seemed to get worse. It only happens when the car has been driven a bit and will get worse the more it's driven. But once it sits for about an hour or two it won't make it until driven for a bit again. The sound happens mostly when I'm decelerating, but will happen while cruising after very long drives. During the shorter drives its more noticeable when I'm in neutral. The sound will happen after I have hit the brakes but the sound will continue to happen if I'm on the brakes or not.

I'm going out on a limb here and suggest your passenger side rear caliper sliders need work.

I'll inspect them today and see if they are alright then I'll throw some grease on there if needed.

I'll second the brakes dragging.

I went out and bought some grease in hopes to grease the sliding pin but as I was about to take it off I noticed that one of my wheel lug nut studs were broken off and that the wheel wasn't sitting correctly. So I proceeded to take the wheel off and another stud broke. At this point I knew the problem was coming from the wheel so as I took it off I noticed there were two center rings on this tire. One was stuck in the rim and one was stuck to the rotor. I have not rotated the tires since I have purchased the miata so I'm pretty bummed that the last shop/person who did rotate them didn't make sure of that. But nevertheless I now have two studs to change (well really all 4 because why not) but at least the horrible sound is gone. I have taken off that wheel to check things before but I guess I just over looked it. But thanks for the help guys to persuade​ me check the brakes :bigtu:
And I always use a torque wrench for anything I ever do aha

The fact that there has been two hub rings on it since you've owned it, and you've done all that work to it...

...really makes me think you should have someone else do your car work for you.

The reason I never caught it but did this time was because one fell out of the wheel and the other one was actually stuck on the rotor and had changed colors. I haven't been the only one to do work on it or inspect it either so I wasn't the only one to miss it.
