Carrier is the thing with wings that attaches the diff to frame.

Where ever the gears are, it's called the differential...

what's inside that is the differential...

The differenital allows each of the driving to rotate at different speeds..how is a big chuck of cast iron going to do that?

Third member, pinion housing, diff carrier, diff housing. All "correct".

In the picture the differential is still circled, and they are usually sold/shipped as a unit.

Hate it when junkyards refer to the diff assembly as the third member. Maybe on an American V8, but the damn thing isn't a member at all on an IRS car.
