clutch job price

I just got quoted a price of 820 bucks for ACT Steet clutch, throwout bearing and rear main seal installation and parts . Its at one of the tune shops. I usually like doing things myself but not sure i want to spend all that time under the car, getting a little old at 54. Seems to me to be only about 300 for the labor. Guess Im just trying to decide whether or not to do it myself. Opinions appreciated

Sounds fair, I would do it. Isn't there something else you'd rather spend your time on?

paul 11-13-2008 12:46 PM

$300 seems like a fair price to me.

Toddcod 11-13-2008 12:52 PM

Don't listen to me. I have the Mexican shops do my work. LOL They install clutches on miatas for $160.

gman3 11-13-2008 12:53 PM

yeah it really does sound fair. I guess my thing is it seems like for whatever reason things get fucked up when i bring it to somebody, but these guys do list Miatas as one of their specialtys. And I do get satisfaction from doing stuff myself, but the clutch job sounds a little nasty, not hard but nasty

And you don't have to do the warranty work if something goes wrong. ;) IMO there's no satisfaction in a clutch job besides being finished.

Can't you source the parts cheaper, then have the shop install $500 sounds very high for a street clutch...

well i was just doing a quick price check and I figured about 420 for the ACT clutch kit, 20 for the rear main seals and some for oil, so that would be about 350 labor, maybe i can get the kit cheaper I dont know.
I guess other option would be $100.00 for stock clutch and 17 from Rosenthal and do it myself. That would be a good savings that might relieve some of the bodily pain I see coming from this job.
Im not gonna up the boost (5 PSI) and dont launch so I think the stock clutch would work fine

I took my parts to Clutch Doctors (local chain). They installed my parts and turned the flywheel for under $200. Figure the parts you listed are $400. $820 sounds a couple hundred too high.

For the price of the clutch kit check Carolina Clutch and Performance, Inc.: Performance Clutches &amp Flywheels they have the best price and free shipping.

I have been quoted 500 everywhere I went to ask, so 300 is extremely fair.

I was quoted from $250 to $450 locally with me supplying all of the parts. The $250 source did not have time to do it, so basically I was looking at $450. So I did it myself.

For $200 (cueball1) I would have happily paid someone else to do it as long as I know they did it correctly.

the correctly part is what worries me

The shop I went to quoted right around 400 for a job with me supplying the clutch.

If you have a garage, do it yourself. I'm doing one on the Integra right now. I spend ~1 hour per night. We're all here to help if you have any problems.

I say take the money you will save by doing it yourself and buy a compressor, impact gun, sockets and extensions. Its not that difficult a job with the right tools. I did mine myself and I am 59.

If the car is not a DD and you have a garage I would reccomend doing it yourself. You will need a tranmision jack and about 1.5 to 2 feet worth of extensions. With those the job is not to bad. Braineack and I can do it in about 2 hours now if we try, 3 hours taking our time. Remeber when you go to put the tranmission back in to jack the engine up some so the backend leans downward. Will make it go in smooth as butter.
