Coil Packs

Are 94/95 coil packs different from 96 coil packs? Can a 96 coil pack be used on a 95 motor?

yes
no, lol
if you put a 96 motor in a 95 car with maintaining the 95 harness/ECu, you have to use 94-95 coils, but if you have the 96+harness/ECU you have to use 96+ coils
or you can just build some COPs

I should explain and maybe it will answer a few other questions. The motor is going in a Locost 7. I have a 95 and 96. The 95 motor is out of a wrecked car with 26K on it. I pulled the wiring harnesses from both. The 95 harness was damaged in a couple of areas from the wreck but is an OBDI harness which I heard was easier to get running in a scratchbuilt car like the Locost. The car was partially parted out when I bought it and the coil pack is missing.

The 96 car was undamaged and I have the intact harness and (and coil pack) for that car, but it is an OBDII.

That being the case, if it were you, would you splice up the 95 harness (probably a dozen wires damaged, but maybe more) or just use the pristine 96 harness and deal with the OBDII? What additional sensor/smog stuff will be on the 96 that won't be on the 95?

my apologize, i understand now, i should have remembered that...
if it was me, i would go with the 95 harness and salvage it, if you can use a sodlering iron its not biggie...you should still consider the COPs build, it is too easy and too many benefits not to do it, even if its a locost 7, its still Miata hardware...
i will be able to hook you up with some 94-95 coils once i finish my COPs...

lol Dan; Happy 2008!

the 96 coil packs dwell differently than the 94-95 ones. otherwise you can make them work. but you'll overheat them on a stock 94-95 ECU. If you can control the dwell, it should be easy, but you may not get a tach signal :)

I just started slogging through the big COP thread. Doesn't look too bad and let's me keep the 95 harness. That was my initial thought to fix it, but I hated the thought of possibly chasing gremlins on wiring that looked good on the outside and broken inside causing intermittents. I will have enough challenges getting it to run as it is.

cops are an easy solution. look in the archives for all the nitty gritty.
