Coils to COPS

So I am thinking about getting rid of my stock coils and running COPS on my '99. Is there PNP COPS that I can buy that go right on, or is this something I have to custom assemble from junkyard / ebay parts?
Also, will this be okay to run with the stock ECU?

Stock ECU, yes. I don't think there's an assembled unit you can put right on though. A few people including Savington and Railz have made harness to sell, otherwise it's up to you to buy the coils, and fabricate a mounting plate and harness. I suggest ignoring the instructions in the COPs thread and buying ebay connector pigtails, soldering on extensions, and soldering those into your Miata's harness. The bracket is easy enough to make with a .290" drill and 1" hole saw. I used 1/8" aluminum from HD though, not the thinner stuff suggested.

COPS will work with a stock ecu?

Yes, with less modification than for MS. No little resistor for the tach.

Ideally you have a dwell reducer, as the stock ECU's dwell times are too high, but in reality nobody's ever had a failure so it should be fine. I do make the harnesses, but there is a really long lead time for my kits right now.

That's crazy, didn't know that.

I ran LSx coils off the stock PCM. Their dwell requirements are similar to stock.

Do my set of popped coils count? (Since I did it with a MS, running stock-ignition dwell)

I didn't know you had popped a coil. They just stopped working, or what was the failure mode?

Ben 01-16-2010 11:11 PM

Ha, really? :eek5: You need to be in the 3 ms range with the toyo coils.

kotomile 01-16-2010 11:22 PM

Yeah, at some point while I was in Cali I stumbled upon my dyno thread and flashed my old .msq, totally forgetting about the dwell (dyno'd on stock ignition). It held up around town but I started frying coils on the interstate. I got a miss that started in boost and then worsened. Brain (Qckslvr) helped me a lot in diagnosing it over the phone. The coils actually popped too, lemme find the pic...

Here's the thread: https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/t41933/

What mods are needed to use COPS with the MSPnP???

Thanks.

Install COPs. Set dwell settings as appropriate (common Toyo coils are ok at ~3ms running dwell). Enjoy.
