COP CAP Discussion
I added my 10k mfd cap to the COP harness yesterday. Tapped it in right at the hollowed ignitor plug, and tucked the cap in nicely under the ignitor's bracket.
Of course it rained yesterday and this morning, and I didn't want to gallivant on wet roads. Finally this evening it was dry enough to go out. I got a few partial throttle stabs in, and what I noticed was the car was a bit leaner than what I was accustomed to, followed by a tad richer. I was also cruising a bit leaner than what I'd tuned to, hitting mid 18s instead of mid 17s. And in spots I'd hit high 18s which would cause a lean stumble. Hypothesis: Stronger spark created a better burn (hence lean), creating more MAP and putting me into untuned/less tuned load zones. Support: Lean down low followed by rich up top MAP didn't take a giant shit at higher rpms like I've been experiencing. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to push harder on the car because there was a damn tour of homes and the cops were everywhere. Ass hole cops. I wasn't datalogging anyway. Interested to hear other experiences as you guys install. |

I just want my COPs to spark after I install the CAP. I have no hope of even attempting to complete the dwell reducing circuit anytime soon so it'll be a short test then back to stock.

I had a similar experience with mine this afternoon... cruise got much much leaner, while under boost it seemed to get richer. I was also able to open up my plug gap to .040 with no significant misfires. I didn't do the cap mod though. I chose to install a relay and give the coils their own 12ga 12V supply, I also gave them a 12ga ground to the back of the head.

This question is particularly aimed to Jason, (i should message him) but this should be good for other people running a COP setup on NBs.
I was curious if the rating for the CAP is different for the NB because each coil on the NB has their own 12V and Ground point on the stock harness? how would i go about this? |
I started up my car with the caps installed the day before yesterday and it started up significantly faster and idled noticeably smoother.

Anyone know if an 85c instead of the 105c cap be approperiate?

You really have to think about the environment that this will be mounted in. Do you think that the temperature of the engine bay is under 85*C? I personally have no idea how hot that area around the intake manifold gets. It wouldn't be too hard to get a TC and measure the temp around that area. But for a lot less time and effort, you could just buy the 105C cap and be in the same boat as the rest of us.
