Ordered a 1.8 flywheel from AutoZone. They told me 2 days to order it. A week and a half later, and guess what, no flywheel.

Got a different used flywheel from Splitime (originally got it to be the "core" for the new flywheel, core charge was $90). Sent it to the machine shop on Wednesday, got it back Thursday. Here's what they did:
Balancing $40
Lightening $40
Resurfacing $50

Guess I shoulda asked them the cost of the machine work up front. Was expecting it cost like half that. But, they ended up shaving 5lbs off of it, went from 19.5 to 14.5 lbs. Anyone know the weight of a stock 1.6 f/w?

heh, look what you can find if you search
1.8 stock = 18-19 lbs
1.6 stock = 17-18 lbs
FM flywheel is 9.5 lbs lighter than stock
other lightweight wheels tend to be around 9-10 lbs lighter than stock
"street light" wheels tend to be around 13lbs. So my 15 lb wheel should be ok I guess.

I had mine resurfaced by Napa for like $36. I doubt they balanced it though.

Yeah that's what I figured since they're taking equal amount of material off the entire surface.

Not trying to make you feel bad, but I had my stock 1.6 lightened, balanced, and resurfaced at a local machine shop for $40, it sounds like they fleeced you a little.

Yeah it was a little higher than I thought it would be, but like I said I didn't ask ahead of time, so I can't complain too much. It looks like they did a real good job, so whatchya gonna do

It might be on the high side, but your prices are not that bad. I had my flywheel resurfaced for 45 bucks at napa. I'd imagine lightening and balancing would run about about 40-60 more.

I paid ~$100 for a lightened and balanced stock 1.8L flywheel off the M.net classifieds.

I paid $300 for a JUN flywheel, 10k later I just paid $40 to resurface my OEM flywheel to swap it in....

JUN weighs only 10lbs

13 lbs seems to be the minimum limit for a street flywheel

I ran an 8.8lbs on my civic... and loved it. Daily driven, tracked often.

I wonder if the complaints people have with lightweight flywheels is lack of driving manual or lack of time adjusting to the flywheel. Or maybe its miata drivetrain specific?

Honestly... if cost wasn't a factor... I'd run the lightest flywheel I could find... always.
