Crank Angle Sensor

Yesterday my car threw a P0335 Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction code. The car was very difficult to start. Today it won't start at all. Not even a pop. I logged the cranking and it isn't showing any RPM nor injector pulses. So, hoping that it is just coincidence, I was going to try swapping the crank angle sensor off of my spare 99 motor. The problem is, I don't even know what or where the crank angle sensor is or what it entails to change it. Maybe the connector came unhooked? IDK. Anyone have any pointers, photos of where it is, etc?

it's the obvious crank position sensor next to the crank pulley. memory says it's on the driver's side, i think 1 bolt and 1 pigtail is all.

lack of crank sensor will cause your symptoms. failure of the crank sensor is not unheard of.

the connector is about 6 or so inches above the sensor itself. it snakes up behind the belts on the front of the motor.

OK I found it. Debating on switching the old one to test or just buying new as it looks like a bit of a PITA to replace. If it's cheap, I'm buying new. On M.net, they talk about making sure the gap is right (.019"-.059") and that it is clean. I may try cleaning it and cranking.

around $100 new. could also be a problem with your fancy new standalone or its associated wiring harness.

Yeah, I just saw that. $75-$83. I'm going to swap the one off my old motor.

I suppose that it could be the ECU. I may swap back to the stock ECU to see if it will start, but I doubt it. It started many times with the new ECU.

It's a breeze to swap, the gap is easy to set, do it with a business card if you don't have a feeler gauge.
Mine failed, its a common for them to crap out.

Well I think I found the problem. The ground side of the crankshaft position sensor ties in with the ground on the MAF (BLK/BLU). The ground side of the TPS ties in with the ground on the AIT sensor, water temperature sensor, FTP sensor, EGR boost sensor and both O2 sensors (BLK/RED). Seeing as all three of the codes are tied to both of these two ground systems, if I switch the MAP ground from the MAF side to the TPS side, I should be good to go. (Just like Travis told me to do after the first MAF replacement) The MAF was still bad due to the 12V hit. Both grounds still read continuity to the valve cover, so IDK what is up. In any case, I hope his does it. All because I read the meter showing continuity to ground on both wires and thought "ground is ground" and that I knew what I was doing. All I was going to do is save myself five minutes to cut and resplice the ground wire. Look what it cost me.

Coincidence on codes? I think not.
