Crimper tool
 

I'm installing a vvt motor on my 1990 miata and I want to do all the connections the right way from the start. Do you guys recommend certain crimper for insulated but splices?.

There are other used ones on ebay that looks decent too.

That crimper looks sweet with the case and assortment of dies. I've always had good luck with Amazon tool purchases.

Non insulated barrel crimps and heat shrink is the better way to go for automotive wiring. It's more water proof and smaller profile. For non-insulated crimps you don't need the ratcheting feature. Ratcheting crimping tools are are bulky and kind of annoying to use for a large number of crimps.

This, so much. "Right way" and "insulated terminals" should be mutually exclusive. I have the Channellock version of those Kleins, and it's all I use for just about everything but Deutsch connectors. Bare terminals, and adhesive-lined heat shrink - only way to fly.
