diff fluid

what diff fluid should I pick up for my 7" rear with rx7 clutch lsd
conditions:
1> it needs to be correct for application
2> I have to be able to pick it up today/tomorrow AM
3> it' cant cost like eleventybillion dollars

Loki047 10-05-2007 09:23 AM

I always thourght for those LSDs you just found something with out friction modifiers...

Ben 10-05-2007 09:36 AM

if you get something w/o friction modifiers you have to then add them in. I think both GM and Ford offer friction modifier.

Ben 10-05-2007 09:43 AM

I can get Redline 75W90 Gear Oil with Limited-Slip Differential Friction-Modifier
http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/ite...p?T1=RL7590+01
$11/qt
winner?

Loki047 10-05-2007 09:53 AM

I thought the friction modifiers screw the clutch surfaces up. Or am i getting confused with motorcycles?

Braineack 10-05-2007 09:53 AM

looks like a typical 80w90 is reccomended.

brgracer 10-05-2007 10:01 AM

Call your local auto store, my local Pep Boys carries Royal Purple 75W90 (not sure if it's the friction modifiers added one though, if you need them) for ~$9 and no shipping.

Ben 10-05-2007 10:14 AM

sweet, Royal Purple will work, plus I get a small discount at pep boys AND they'll deliver :)
next hustler-esq question: how much do I need?

two of them, the big ones.

Ben 10-05-2007 10:19 AM

mmm... my owner's manual says .65 Liter for my 1.6 diff. Can't see a 1.8 diff being that much bigger :gtfo:

Ben 10-05-2007 10:32 AM

ordered a 1 qt bottle of the Royal Purple 75W90

Thanks Tom

more than you can afford, pal.

Braineack 10-05-2007 10:49 AM

wtf are you talking about.

one, you hardly need any diff fluid. two, you're spitting out nonsense.

Ben 10-05-2007 10:52 AM

I've never actually seen that movie, but its so much fun to quote.

Braineack 10-05-2007 10:54 AM

seriously, you're about to get gagged in about 2 minutes.

patsmx5 10-05-2007 11:18 AM

I use Royal Purple In all my vehicles diffs. and so far it's worked flawlessly. I believe Royal Purple also has the friction modifier in it. It's funny, I have 6 quarts or Royal Purple sitting in my garage right now. I'm going to change the front and rear diff oil in my 86 trooper one day.

Oscar 10-05-2007 11:25 AM

what fluid for a new kaaz lsd? use the supplied kaaz fluid for the break-in or should i break it in with some cheap fluid and put in the kaaz fluid afterwards?

Fluid capacity for a 1.8L diff is 1 liter but I can never get more than 0.8-0.9 liters before it starts coming out the overfill hole and yes, the car is level.

y8s 10-05-2007 11:56 AM

kaaz suggests NOT using synthetic because it negatively affects lockup.

and they suggest the FORD type friction modifier.

bripab007 10-05-2007 11:56 AM

Really? I just replaced the fluid last weekend in my 7" Miata/RX-7 diff., and it took more than 1L...probably close to 1.25L.

And I recall when changing the fluid on the slightly longer 7" diff. in the RX-7, I wanna say it was close to 1.5L.

I strongly suggest you use the KAAZ fluid for break-in,unless the want to run the risk of fucking up your new diff.

Oscar 10-05-2007 12:27 PM

ok thanks

BTW,go to a big empty parking lot and do alot of figure 8's as you can with the car.By doing this, you are seating the plates in the diff together.

After you are done, change the fluid right away and put fresh stuff in.

yeah I've seen the instructions, luckily there's a big parking lot 200 meters from my home, would that be ok to drive there first to break it in?

Have done it three times and all three times it took just slightly less than one bottle. Just checked the owners manual and it said 1.06 quarts/1.0 liters. Maybe the RX-7 LSD is smaller than a torsen? :dunno:

True...or perhaps I just slightly overfilled, as my fluid pump hose tends to be a pretty tight fit in the fill hole.

funny... kaaz told me over the phone to use the cheapest dino fluid I could find and then drain it after break in.

Funny.......I guess we spoke to two different people that work for kaaz.

Braineack 10-05-2007 02:58 PM

they have break in procedure on their website....why not read up on it.

figure-8 for 30mins FTW.

......but make sure you have a puke bag sitting next to ya while your doing it.

Zabac 10-05-2007 03:53 PM

this may be an odd question, but when you change fluid in a torsen, does it lose functionality for a few miles?...i am getting ready to change my fluid real soon, and i heared so from one person, can anyone support that claim, im curious?

canadian vs. US i guess. frankly I doubt the fluid they make is significantly different than any other dino-based fluid but it sure costs more. that's why I went ahead with what the dude said and used cheap shit for break in and then the kaaz for long term. seems to work ok.

rollin904 10-05-2007 04:35 PM

what do you guys use for tranny fluid? i just changed mine, and my turret fluid with the mobil 1 syn. fluid, and i was going to do the same for my diff when i take it off this weekend to put on the new mounts. (stock open diff btw)

Being a gear-based LSD solution...that claim sounds wayyyy out there.:eek5:

Even if it were true, what does it really matter? Unless you are in the habit of changing your Torsen's diff. fluid while parked on a 30 grade hill covered in loose sand.

Zabac 10-05-2007 05:40 PM

like i said, i was curious to hear what someone else thinks...
i never changed my fluid so i dont know...actually im clueless

as far as tranny fluid, i used Syncromesh, good stuff
for the diff i plan on using redline, it was recommended to me...any negatives to these chioces from anyone?
tahnks

Well I had (1) 1 qt jug delivered... so that better be enough.

How the FUCK did you get "canadian vs. us " out of my post?

BTW,there is more than just one person that work at kaaz.So I guess that's why we both got two different answers.

neogenesis2004 10-05-2007 08:11 PM

He said that because you live in canada, and he lives in the US.

your panties = in a bunch

i have no problem with canada, relax. i figured they had a different distributor up there or something. probably not huh.

anyway, i vacation in canada. go grab a molson and realx a bit.

Ben 10-06-2007 05:08 PM

The rx7 lsd takes more than 1 qt. Not sure of total capacity, probably somewhere around 1.3 qts or so. My dad had a mini-barrell of 80W90 GL5 gear lube with a pump on top (like a keg) so I just topped off with that. That's why I'm not sure what total capacity was, but it's definately more than 1 qt.

and Royal Purple gets its name because... well, it's purple.
