Weird. My 99' only has two bolts up top, I know. Remove those two, unplug the wires, and out they come. Strange.

On my 99' there is a thing on the bottom that "snaps". Like you remove the two bolts, wiggle, wiggle, pull, and like a ball & socket thing on the bottom releases and the headlight comes out. Had them out several times without pulling the bumper, and I've pulled the bumper and their wasn't anything there to bolt the headlight to it. Weirdness. Glad I don't have to pull my bumper.

Here is the method I used and it worked perfectly except the plastic piece that broke (little tab on one of them) my fault, possible to do as described below without braking anything. I am not responsible if you break your **** doing this ...

Remove 4 bolts on lights and four bolts on the metal portion of the bumper.

Pull headlights straight out while pulling up on the bumper (metal portion).

Bake in the oven on 225 preheated for 5 minutes.

Lift tabs etc. then just pry approximately two inches of the lense from the housing.

Remove shielding (piece you are painting) with two small screws.

Paint

Reinstall shield and place whole lense into the housing (push it to stay so the adhesives will warm together.

Bake for 4-5 minutes and push firmly and even allowing tabs to reset.

Reinstall and make sure the guide fits correctly.

Here is a quick picture I took...its dirty as hell, but as stated earlier I was in a hurry. PLease excuse my partially Robbin William's arms

All in all this can easily be done in 45 minutes to 1 hr.
More pictures tomorrow

No worries...I actually like the look of them because they match the sidemarkers I put on...time to ***** another older crappy picture with my new beater wheels (99 protege IIRC) while I work on my Fittipaldis.

It is low, but not too low because I daily it; but I believe the grass may be messing with the represented height (quick picture was taken after washing the car real quick). I am running Vmaxx coilovers and IIRC all of the perches are adjusted half way up the sleeve. Got them for super cheap when deciding on a suspension alternative to stock, and suprisingly I am very happy with them.

BTW I should have some pictures of the lights tonight. Fun and easy mod IMO if you have an oven available.

Looks good. I'll probably leave the amber part but black out all the chrome reflector. I painted the front chrome mazda badge some metalic dark grey (similar to camry sport badges, my inspiration), same on the mazda badge on the rear. Removed the chrome miata one. I just think chrome looks dumb on a sports car. But those damn housings are chrome and so are the little hard top box things that go over the frankenstein bolts. Gotta paint those one day too and I'll have deleted every ounce of chrome from the car.

I wonder if I could microwave them... No oven.

EDIT: And I should mention this thread is full of win.

99NBMia,
Nice job! You can use regular auto wax to buff those lenses clear. If they are really opaque, use polishing compound first, then wax.

I have yet to see this mod done with glass black paint.

Thanks for the comments guys. I may pull them again maybe on the weekend and try a projector conversion & spray with gloss black...

I think they look hot the way they are. gloss black is not a bad Idea though definitely worth a try. I am thinking of darkening all my badging as well....where did you get the paint pat? if you remember that is

18psi, what did you do for the turn signals? Are you using regular white bulbs or did you get colored bulbs? Both variations look cool.

I am still on the stock white bulbs, but want to get something different. possibly yellow or hyper white. the fogs will be yellow hid's and 6k hid's for lights, so for the turn signals it will be either or

Be careful guys, if you go for projector headlights. Got some friends over here that did the black-out at the 01+ headlights and they get blistering paint just beneath the projectors due to the heat that the projectors produce.

Yes this is an old thread but I wanted to confirm or deny the blistering with HID heat rumour. I run HID's in my 02 right now and may do this mod in a few weeks or so.

I dont want to be part of any blistering not anywhere ever !

There is a sticky where I describe the process in detail.

Search for it

Like with the search button or something? I dont have time for that, I barely have time to type this paragrah.
