DIY Front Grill Camera Mount
SO, i recently duct taped my video camera to the front grill of a civic and ran through some twistys around the county and it got me thinking. I am wanting to build a mount for my camera that will position the camera so all you see is what is in front of the car. The camera has a threaded hole on the bottom for a tripod. Any suggestions? Im also open for suggestions on ways to control the camera from inside the car. Possibly through a DV connection.
Thanks in Advance, Wes |
Build the mount so that is bolts to one or both of he babyteeth tow hook locations. I might draw something up this week if i get time. But I would mount it to those holes and just make the mount so that it drops down low enough and is rigid enough to support the camera. I would be worried about shit breaking my camera though. I also like seeing part of the car so you can relate location of the car to the road.

yeah, there shouldnt be much debris in the front of the car unless i am following another car, im not REALLY worried about it but i could also build a mount for my roll bar which may be easier. I just watched the GIS2 video and i think you get a really good feeling of speed with the camera mounted low and in the front.

I'll have to check out that video, i'm sure its a cool place to have the camera none the less.

I have made similar videos with a camera mounted to both my street and race bikes. IMO and several others the best way to do this is to use a remotely mounted lipstick camera and use your camcorder in 'vcr' mode. You need one with a video input.
The lipstick cameras are small and lightweight and thus much easier to mount. With a full camera you need to build a VERY sturdy mount otherwise the vibration really screws up the footage. A lipstick camera can just be basically held in place with good velcro and it will work great. You can get them cheap on EBay. Helmetcamera makes nice ones with a nice mount but they cost more. |
Pick up a suction cup mount and put the camera on the hood.

Youtube always rapes the resolution when I upload things.
Some of the nose cam shots from this video were just done with a cheap digital duct taped into the mouth. |
