Do you think a MetalCat will satisfy the OBDII system?

Seriously. My current "high flow cat" is old and probably so coated in carbon and jizz that it doesn't effectively satisfy the on-board diagnostics generation ii tests.

I want to mock this up and make it work since I have it. In theory it should work for at least a few weeks to let the ECU run its tests, right?

I'd go with a bigger "bullet" from Enthuza because people seem to have good luck with them. Mine has v-bands for easy in and out if I ever have to do a real inspection.

y8s 07-28-2011 10:10 PM

if i buy a cat to pass emissions, it wont be a bullet, it'll be a big fat oem style one for 1/2 the price of the bullet.

I have this one sitting in my basement and the parts to install it--including the V-bands.

I plan to size the swap-out section to fit a big oem style cat too... just in case.

The guys at my local inspection station told me I wouldn't pass with a metal cat. I haven't tried with my enthuza metal cat yet but they told me they had never seen a car with a standalone pass Ontario emissions and I passed easily with an oem cat if that means anything.

Our laws are silly though, it's easier to pass emissions in a miata with a 6cyl cummins swap than a factory motor with a standalone.

I'd get an oem style cat to use only for testing.

falcon 07-28-2011 10:47 PM

Lol @ never passed with a stand alone. BC has far tougher emissions standards than Ontario (ours are on part with Cali) and I've passed my FD, a build R23 GTR and my Miata all with stand alones.

Braineack 07-29-2011 07:27 AM

I pass with flying colors using a metal core cat. 200 cell, IIRC. But that's sniffer.

M-Tuned 07-29-2011 09:31 AM

I passed Ontario emissions with a Stock Cat and Meqasquirt. We now have a 5 gas attached to our dyno so we can actually tune to pass emissions.

I must say that all the metal core cats I have seen fail on newer cars. The numbers just shoot up!

y8s 07-29-2011 10:02 AM

1. I am using the stock ECU

2. I don't have to pass a sniffer test.

I only have to have OBDII happy.

JayL 07-29-2011 11:22 AM

If it's just to keep obd2 happy, then try one of these or a similar product. There's many different versions from different vendors available, so just find one that will work for your setup.

It probably will possibly with some help from a sparkplug non fouler.

Saml01 07-29-2011 11:58 AM

I pass OBD 2 with a metal core 300.

Faeflora 07-29-2011 12:10 PM

If anyone wants it I have an enthuza race cat with pipe.

falcon 07-29-2011 01:40 PM

My car is OBD2, but in BC you only need to pass the scan test if it's 98 or newer. So I run a full stand alone without issues :D... lol

Gut the cat, and put an o2 sensor tricker on there. It is like a 500 mfarad capacitor jumped between a couple of things.... Yeah, o2 simulator, thats what. I actually received a ticket in virginia for having a gutted cat because the cop was a retard, and tried to give me an exhaust ticket. They are strict about the VA communistwealth exhaust law on the TN border. "No car can be operated on a commonwealth highway that exhibits higher noise levels than the factory car." Ok I dumbed it down, but bristol VA cops are all dicks. But the tickets are easy enough to get out of because they don't have a listing of stock car dB readings, and they never record theirs... ok I will stop. /rant.

Pitlab77 07-30-2011 09:02 AM

all the metallic core turbo NB1 and NB2 cars that I know have passed the OBDII test with metallic core cats. I'm not sure what the cell count was on them.

you forget you're posting in a treehugger's thread?

If the cat is capable of making the OBD2 software happy, it is usually capable of passing smog.
