Does this look good (vented CF hood inside)

Props to thesnowboarder for letting me get the photos. I've had a couple people tell me that it would look better painted black. I was worried the bulge would look too aggressive for the rest of the car, but I'm not worried about that anymore. I sorta dig the raw CF, but a fiberglass + painted version would be a little more low-key.

Ideas/opinions?

I think the following:

A) A blind monkey cut the hole in the front bumper.
B) The hood looks money in cf.

ApexOnYou 08-01-2008 01:42 AM

Was the hood latched? It looks like there is a rather large gap on the front edge. I am assuming you just threw it on quick though.

IMO it looks sick, I think raw CF is way played out but that would definitely be the hot shit painted black.

Fireindc 08-01-2008 01:45 AM

I like it.. if you fix the gap in the hood. It would look double good if you fixed the hole in the front bumper.

Leave it CF imo. Only because cf/black looks really good in real life, and not so good in pictures.

Bond 08-01-2008 01:45 AM

I think CF on street cars looks kind of ricey. Paint it black it would look sick though. I think you have the fitment issues under control.

+1. Whats the deal with that huge gap? Other than that, looks hella sick!

disturbedfan121 08-01-2008 02:30 AM

i like it for the most part. i wish i had the balls to cut into my cf hood lol or could cut into the front bumper like you did

18psi 08-01-2008 02:58 AM

i think it looks pretty good too.....and agree with other guy about the hole in the bumper: fucking ugly

Savington 08-01-2008 03:20 AM

I swear the top of the bumper cut is straight. The airflow has put a wave in the bumper so it doesn't look straight. I'm going to do a Brightning duct eventually to clean it up. Hood fitment is poor because we didn't even attempt to straighten it up.

elesjuan 08-01-2008 03:29 AM

No signals looks even sexier on a black car man, wow. I honestly never noticed before you didn't have them.

NoirRacer 08-01-2008 04:06 AM

I say keep it CF, it'll save you money in the long run and it doesn't look bad at all.

Torkel 08-01-2008 04:11 AM

That things is sexy!! Hole in the bumper and all, I think it looks great. The hood would perhaps look better painted, but it would not make enough difference to be worth the money IMO.

UrbanSoot 08-01-2008 05:08 AM

i think you need new tires!

UrbanSoot 08-01-2008 05:10 AM

and do you seriously run nt01s on street??

R-comps are like crack. I hustled an STI on RE-01Rs around an onramp tonight and it felt lackluster :(

Dammit Sav, don't say shit like that, I am still in the honeymoon stage with my RS2's.

I'd go with fiberglass painted black, or i'd run the hood track only.

BradC 08-01-2008 07:57 AM

I like the look of the vent in the hood, reminds of a Knight's Sport (IIRC) for the FD.

Who made it?

m2cupcar 08-01-2008 08:43 AM

Keep it as-is, cf goes subtle on black cars so you're safe. ;)

levnubhin 08-01-2008 08:55 AM

I say keep it as long as you can get it to fit better and then paint it black.

True, it just very well may be straight....but the yellow bumper material showing in spots gives impression that it is not. Paint is in order for that fix. Gapping of the hood is easily rendered as well. You can paint if you must, but it is sacrilege to paint CF. Get FG if it must be painted. I went this route so there wouldn't be an issue of perfection for a cut that big.....see sig. :)

Autokonectionasdfafff (however it is spelled) is your typical rice product, CF hoods are all fiberglass anyways, no point in painting them if you were going to spend the extra to get that one layer of CF.

y8s 08-01-2008 09:58 AM

PAINT IT BLACK.

If there is one mantra I live by when I add shit to my car it is:

LESS IS MORE

I don't know if that's the same hood I have, but I had mine painted in a semi-gloss black, I like the look better this way. It was nice in CF, but like everyone says that was 3-5 years ago.
btw-i got mine from Erebuni corp. who is no longer in business.

ps-The reason he has a gap is b/c his car is a 1.8 and the hood needs minor modification to clear the top of the valve cover, the section over the timing belt, as is, it will not shut.

Splitime 08-01-2008 10:12 AM

Zabac, I believe the hood in the OPs post is an Autokonexion hood. Not the old erebuni.

jayc72 08-01-2008 10:14 AM

Leave it CF. Paint will only add weight.

hustler 08-01-2008 10:46 AM

installed by helen keller's body shop?

It looks cool. I still want to see what the Carbontrix vent looks like on a stock hood.

chucker 08-01-2008 10:50 AM

Since you're asking opinions, Sav, I think your car looked the most tits back in the day before the rotozip treatment and the CF hood. Pic in your sig is sic.

Sorry to be a douch guys, but what's the advantage of CF in this application? How much weight are we looking at saving here? I understand the value of venting but is this CF contraption significantly better than a stock alu hood with an extractor? Factory hood seems to weigh nearly nothing as is, plus it surely has a good bit of heat transfer capacity simply by being alu, eh? Or am I all fucked up here?

Zabac 08-01-2008 10:54 AM

The only advantage of a CF vented hood is the fact that it's vented...mine weighs about the same the stocker does...a fiberglass hood weighs a bit more.

Machismo 08-01-2008 10:59 AM

Other than truly venting w/o modding, Baller status is really the only difference. I was surprised out how light my stocker was when replaced with cowl vented FG unit. Not much savings there, other than function.

Damn.....I type too slow. Or just plain can't read either. :) Yep, what he said.

Saml01 08-01-2008 02:26 PM

Ricerific

cueball1 08-01-2008 02:40 PM

Agree with Saml01,

It's rice rice baby! Painted would be better. At least get some door edging to help finish off the hole in the bumper. Even if you have big plans in the future that would be $5 and 10 minutes well spent.

mad0953 08-01-2008 02:45 PM

Hell the new ZR-1 has a cf roof so I wouldn't worry about it. Hood looks great....are they going to be mass produced? I like where the vent is on the hood.....wonder if it works better than the FM one. On the FM one it looks like water would drain right on the plugs.??

bryantaylor 08-01-2008 02:51 PM

CF in anything is awesome. i dig it sav, keep it carbon

Me too, actually, but I needed to get another hole to install an oil cooler and the car was already overheating at hot track days. It's a much cleaner look without all that stuff, but cooling is one of the few "function over form" things on the car. If I can find another cheap PZ black bumper skin, I'll probably pick it up and have a track nose and a street nose.

I had the Erebuni hood on a 1.6 and it hit the valve cover:vash: SOLD it and went back to stock...If it fits and on the right color...looks good

pwcfan 08-04-2008 11:05 AM

CF Hood looks great !!!

Nice Job on the hoods guys.
Not for me, but it does look cool.
Thanks for the pics.

Paint it, Raw cf against black looks like ass.

Fireindc 08-05-2008 02:40 PM

Hey talusfan, there is something in your nose blocking IC/Rad flow.. ;)

talusfan 08-05-2008 11:19 PM

I find I can bear that miniscule impediment with great fortitude.

msydnor 08-18-2008 09:19 PM

I think it looks good in CF...question, in your sig you show 235rwhp, you should be faster than a 13.7. is that correct? Car looks good.

Faeflora 08-19-2008 01:19 PM

I think it looks kind of dum. In my area pretty much one out of two modified cars has a black hood and/or black trunk lid. Lame. Zabac's car is badass but yours looks like a track whore had a baby with a ricer.

Paint it.

I think the CF looks ballin on your car sav, gotta get yourself one of those hoods!

flyinmiata69 08-20-2008 08:54 PM

hello i own a 2002 miata (base).
Currently i have obx HEADERS, magnaflow EXHAUST, and weapon-r short ram INTAKE. I want to install a turbo im thinking T3 i want 350hp crank. I've been looking around found some on ebay but i do not trust. Found one from japan an HKS. Flyinmiata.com has the FM II but it costs $5000+. I do not want to spend so much just on a kit. I looking to spend max 2,500 on a kit. Like i said im trying to get 350hp to the crank!! That would be like 300rwhp??? I was advised that i will most likely should rebuilt or work on the engine itself basic things like cam gears compression, displacement, and pistons, etc. Can somebody give me the best setup and walk through to achieve 350hp CRANK give or take. O and running safely TOO i dunno really know 10-15 psi. Is it extremely important to work on the motor??? can email me too at craftstar2@hotmail.com, spanks.

paul 08-20-2008 09:08 PM

Where the fuck is braineack? He needs to get midieval on this newb
