Does this mean I'm now one of the cool kids?

Here's bits of my 2nd gear:

rider384 03-24-2010 12:01 AM

How much power?

timk 03-24-2010 12:07 AM

167hp @ wheels, very chunky power curve though, not peaky.

rider384 03-24-2010 12:08 AM

Holy shit, that's kind of scary.

NA6C-Guy 03-24-2010 12:10 AM

More proof how shitty the Miata is for modifying... ;) Less power than just about everything else on the road, and it's shitting it's pants.

Ignore me, I'm in a cynical mood :hustler:

I have countless auto-x launches on Hoosier race rubber over the course of 7 years (original '90 tranny). I'm waiting for the day that my transmission decides to grenade itself. I'm at the point where I want to carry a spare box to national events, especially after the number of similar posts that have come about recently.

Yikes.

NA6C-Guy 03-24-2010 12:15 AM

Mine is stock and sounds like it's ready to go any day now. Sounds like I have a straight cut set of gears, and it doesn't shift like it used to, very sloppy and slow to engage.

Yeah this box has sounded like it's out of a rally car for the last 10,000km.

turotufas 03-24-2010 12:33 AM

If I shift too fast or too slow from 1st to 2nd my transmission says, fuck you!

curly 03-24-2010 12:37 AM

This just in: ALL GEARS AREN'T MADE THE SAME.

hobs wear, machinists get bored and up the feeds, heat treat plants hold shitty tolerances. If I hear one more guy bitch that the box isn't doing it's job, I'm going to have to choke a bitch. Were racing and/or pushing twice the power these things were made for. NA6-Chick, if yours blows N/A, you'll be considered an outlier and excluded from the data as an anomaly.

And now back to my beer.

So you are saying any 5 speed Miata gearbox is good? Out of every car I have dealt with, ours are the worst overall. It did have a nice notchy shift when I first got it, but that is about all positive I have to say for it. I'm sure if I was boosted I would hate it twice as much. 6 speed would be fine though.

Me and my friend each have turbo'd miata 5 speeds. I've been running about 200whp, he's pushing 240. No problems at all. He does autocross, I drag race. Just don't be a douche on it and it'll be fine.

NA6C-Guy 03-24-2010 12:58 AM

It matters not to me, I will never see a Miata 5 speed boosted. T56, yes. It is still my opinion that the Miata transmissions aren't all that great for anything much more than stock. Quite a high failure rate it seems, compared to most other cars. Which I understand it's a small car, and the transmission is also small and relatively weak, but it doesn't change the fact that it's reliability at higher power levels is chance.

But this thread isn't about me and my opinion, so continue on.

crnrhrd 03-24-2010 02:52 AM

I have ABUSED the ever living hell out of my transmission, countless burnouts, high rpm launches, donuts. Supercharged the car at 173k miles(160hp) and turboed the car at 250k miles (roughly putting down 210-220hp). Currently at 267k miles and still on the stock transmission.

....going to go knock on some wood now.

timk 03-24-2010 02:56 AM

If you're lucky hustler might let you touch his wood...

Hi Im Simon 03-24-2010 03:29 AM

haha.... my tranny just died recently too 2nd and 3rd gear is pretty toast. 6 speed is going in now.

kotomile 03-24-2010 05:28 AM

Mine should go all 'splodey any day now.

elesjuan 03-24-2010 08:15 AM

Wow. Welcome to the club? We should have some cool jackets made . . .

This I would like to see. Care to share how you're going to mate a T56 up with a BP?

...And your spare is in my car, so you can't blow that thing up until I get a six-speed....

Nah, It's more fun to talk about it. :giggle:

Elesjuan, it will be mated to an LS1, not a shitty BP!!!

You guys are so defensive about the fag mobiles. You guys must have serious penis envy to all of those Mustangs driving around! :loser:

I keed

mine shifts fine, but sounds like straight cut gears...

timk 03-25-2010 06:11 AM

Making progress. Got the FM brace, mid pipe and driveshaft out, I really hope I can remove the box without taking the headers off:

timk 03-27-2010 04:20 AM

Got the box out today, but had to remove the headers which meant taking the JRSC off. Maybe I should just replace it with a Chinacharger while it's out.

Fireindc 03-27-2010 07:12 AM

I would

Ah, you just have unrealistic expectations! It's a lightweight, aluminum cased trans! The Miata 5 speed holds up a lot better to engine power increases than a stock T5/World Class T5 does (Ford deliberately pulled tip-in ignition timing in the 94+ Mustangs to try and limit all the warranty claims they were getting on stock 5spd 225hp V8s). Granted, it's not bulletproof like an old Ford T&C Toploader 4 spd or Mopar hemi 4spd (both with substantial cast iron cases) but you can usually pickup a spare for $200. I suspect a lot of Miata 5 spds have failed because of poor maintenance too; running low fluid levels, improper fluid types, failure to do regular fluid changes and failure to perform maintenance when trans initially gets noisy or has shifting problems. Either fix the trans when it first gets noisy (Given the relative difficulty and cost of tearing one down to replace syncros, forks and bearings, it is cheaper and faster to go the used route...may not be more reliable in the long term) or buy a cheap spare and drive it until it dies.

BTW, you're dreaming if you think the stock T56 behind an F body LS-1 is more reliable than a Miata 5 speed behind a stock 1.8L. Two trips to the dragstrip with ET Streets were all it took to trash the T56 on my nephew's stock Z28...the T56 does NOT hold up well to powershifts even at stock LS-1 power levels.
