Double Clutching...

Heey there all,

Alright...so I have heard people talk about double clutching and now I'm curious. I do this all the time with my GF but in my car? Do I really need to?

Seriously... i have been experimenting with double clutching my miata but don't really grasp the benefit of it. RPM matching on a downshift, got that part but when running through the gears under acceleration... do our cars really need such things?

From what I read and understand it's really a product of older style transmissions and ours really aren't that oldschool. So... I'm just curious how many members here double clutch their miatas and if it really is worth mastering?

Thanks all and cheers,
M@

If you're not double-clutching.....you might as well be granny shifting too.

I double clutch downshifting, but...I don't see how it makes ANY sense to double-clutch on an upshift since the revs are decreasing and not increasing...

GregTSi 07-25-2010 01:03 PM

Double Clutching is only needed in non-synchronized transmissions.

redfred18t 07-25-2010 01:10 PM

I double clutch

JK. Since I dont drive a car w/o syncros or a big rig, I dont double clutch. I have syncros for a reason lol.

Joe Perez 07-25-2010 01:11 PM

You're lucky you didn't blow the welds on the intake.

aaronc7 07-25-2010 01:15 PM

If you EVER "double clutch"...you're an instant beaner and need to drive cars with autoshitmatics.

double clutch

Last time I double clutched was in a '49 Dodge 5 ton dump truck with a "crash box" (no synchro).

wait what? I'm sorry, but revving while the clutch is disengaged doesn't seem like a smart idea. At all. So I let out the clutch while the car is in neutral, blip the gas and push the clutch back in to finish the downshift.

Doppelgänger 07-25-2010 02:23 PM

So you don't even know what double-clutching is....

Example-

*car in gear/clutch engauged*
push in clutch
move shifter to neutral position
let clutch out
push clutch in
let clutch out
push clutch clutch in
select next gear
let clutch out

Congrats- now you've achieved uber-ricer status if you've even thought you need to do with on a car made after the 1970's.

Fuck, when I'm just driving around, I don't even use a clutch to upshift/downshift. If you really want to challenge yourself, downshift while braking without using the clutch while rev-matching using the throttle to engage the next gear.

Which is to be expected. I should have said "anyone who knowws what d-c'ing is and why is was done should only use it when driving a vehicle that requires it". But I assume that anyone here who has half a brain would already know this.

Lol, two days from now were going to have another blown trans thread.

and he did explain double clutching right, you put the shifter in neutral, clutch out, rev, clutch in, shift, clutch back out. He just didn't explain it well. " So I let out the clutch while the car is in neutral, blip the gas and push the clutch back in to finish the downshift."

I had to drive a 200 mile trip like this, taking off was a bitch.. my clutch wouldn't disengage.

I double clutch from 3-4 in my Legacy GT because that syncro is going bad....

No he is CR, can't you tell

240_to_miata 07-25-2010 09:22 PM

I got in the habit of double clutch downshifting because A) Im usually bored and it entertains me B) Depending on my settings it used to be that double clutching was the only way to rev match and not activate my launch control.

Is it gay? Sure... is it entertaining when you get it right? Yes

turotufas 07-25-2010 10:16 PM

Why don't you girls just pack it up before I leave tread marks on your face?

Ever heard of rev-matching? Yeah...didn't think so. Any real driver here can up shift, down shift, side shift and shift one up your moms ass without using the clutch or stressing the transmission. Duh. Get with the program.

Prospero 07-26-2010 12:43 AM

ROFL...

I am almost sorry I asked; but damn yall... I did get the answer. Total waste of time to double clutch unless my shit is all broken :)

Makes sense to me but it was a burning question that had to be asked. So the only double clutching that will go on will be at home!

Cheers and thanks everyone!

Don't be to quick to jump to conclusions. There are some vehicles with synchronized transmissions that require double-clutching. These vehicles include (amongst others) any vehicle that has more than 5% of it's parts rattle-canned lime green, and anything with a dildo for a shift knob.

NA6C-Guy 07-26-2010 03:54 AM

Double clutching has it's place, and it's not in the year 2010, and not on 99% of the vehicles on the road today.

Savington 07-26-2010 03:57 AM

anyone else like the tuna here?

I <3 double clutching....

...I just don't use the clutch when I do it...

Bond 07-26-2010 11:21 AM

I installed a 2nd clutch pedal so I can always be double-clutching.

cardriverx 07-26-2010 11:28 PM

I was referring to him breaking his trans because I kinda doubt he knows what rev matching is. No doubt im sure you got such skills, you just think and the transmission shifts for you.

turotufas 07-27-2010 01:50 AM

The grip tape on my clutch pedal came off today. Held up for 2 years but I still double clutch too hard for that shit!

hey guys, lets make a poll about waving at other miata drivers

bbundy 07-27-2010 02:14 AM

I double clutch wile driving a non syncro 18 wheeler heavy truck. It’s kind of cool to double clutch down through several gears in a 13 or 18 speed transmission using engine braking to slow you down.

Completely pointless and a waste of time in a Miata.

Bob

Golferluke 07-27-2010 02:28 AM

What double clutching or engine braking?
