Downpipe welded to exhaust, bad idea?

I have begi downpipe/exhaust. It is connected via 1 bolt and slips into each other. I had it come out a few times and recently discovered it may be leaking.

Is it bad if I have the DP welded staight to the exhaust?

I guess it will make things difficult when I want to take it off...

Besides that, anything?

If you are even considering welding them all together... just buy a flange and have it welded in. Don't weld it all up into one piece. Removal will become the devil.

+1

Yeah after I posted this the exhaust shop called me and said it shouldn't be welded...

I'm just trying to figure out why I have a weird sound under boost... I'm rly hoping it is either an exhaust leak or a boost leak.

Recently my drive shaft came off in the back, all the way down to one bolt. When this happened the drive shaft beat the shit out of things under the car, swinging around on one bolt. I'm hoping it just created a leak somewhere in the exhaust.

Thanks for everyones help. I know I've been making lots of noob threads, I'm just trying to learn as much as I can.

It is possible to "pin" it in with a sheet metal screw at the slip joint. Put a little RTV or loctite to help keep it in.

+1 on putting a flange on it with a fresh exhaust gasket of some sort and tightening it down!

Uhhh i welded my DP. But just the DP part where they connect(BEGI one) like you were saying is held together by one bolt. Didnt really like the design. It worked for about a month then it started leaking and turned my hood pitch black. So i took it out and TIG welded it. Now no more exhaust leaks :)

When I had that PITA I slammed the two pieces together and wrapped a coat hanger through the eyelets and twisted it together. Did this fix at an autox during lunch and it held for 8 months after that til I removed it to upgrade.

After re-reading the original post, I feel like I misunderstood. Do you want to weld the 2 piece downpipe together, or do you want to weld the 2 piece downpipe to the exhaust?

Braineack knows all about drive shaft bolts coming loose. It definitely makes interesting sounds. Now when ever I have to pull his transmission I make sure I get those super tight.

hahah, those were the good old days!

Almost did this, but foudn bolt to use.

Haven't stress tested it yet. I had the exhaust come out twice before though launching it...
