drag (queen) advice

i know most of u guys love autoX and road racing, but i am hoping to get some advice/technique on drag racing.

what tires should i run?
i have two 13x8 rims that i want to put some slick/street radials on.

they dont make much in this size rim.

do i want a tall or short tire?

im about 212hp, 5 spd, 4.30 gear.

magnamx-5 08-14-2009 12:59 AM

do not go over 24 inches and get a 7-8 inch slick if you have a 4.3 from a 1.6 then launching on slicks will most certianly kill it. Most importantly take a practice run not for serius time just ot get the feel of the track and the car before you go out and try to pwn any one. GL man also running a fairly low tire pressure can help you hook sometimes.

tyson87 08-14-2009 01:19 AM

Its a 1.8 torsen

And what about launching techniqes?
And y do you say 24"

magnamx-5 08-14-2009 01:40 AM

cause that close to stock and if you realy squat with mich larger and dont have rolled fenders you could do some damage :P . As far as launching goes i like to take mine up to around 3500 or alil more as that is where my wheel spin begins to be a major issue for me. Your launch RPM is wholy dictated by your traction and spool characteristics.

Makeup is most definitely the key to pulling it off. I mean, the clothes are important, but makeup makes the girl. Also, be sure to shave right before you go out, the 5 o'clock shadow seems to be a dealbreaker. :ugh2:

leatherface24 08-14-2009 09:31 AM

ill help you out dude on the 21st

Braineack 08-14-2009 09:33 AM

you'll destroy the torsen if you launch hard on slicks.

Braineack 08-14-2009 09:58 AM

But in all seriousness, Tyson, you need no Drag advice.

I have a set of 15" rims and run the BFGoodrich g-Force T/A Drag Radials (225/50/15):
BFGoodrich Tires | g-Force T/Aâ„¢ Drag Radial | Tire Overview

I pretty much drag race my miata exclusively, and the biggest thing I've found is getting enough heat into the tires. Unless you have linelock, doing a good burnout is pretty tough. I don't have line lock, so when I'm in the burnout box I dump the clutch at about 4600 rpm, and then pin the gas and bounce the car off the rev limiter until I almost get to the start line. This gets those g-Force T/A tires super sticky.

My most recent runs at the 1/4 mile were in the 14.4 seconds, which I wasn't super happy about. My wastegate doesn't want to hold more then 12psi above 4500 RPM, and i'm still running with a cat and a 2.25 exhaust, so lots of room for improvement. My 60ft time was quite good though at 1.930 (anything under 2 seconds is great).

As for your 13" tires, I'm not sure who makes a drag radial in that size. BFGoodrich only goes down to 14".

If anyone is reading this thread and has some suggestion for a better transmission to run, I'd appreciate the advice. I'm currently using a 1990 1.6 tranny, and desperately want some longer gears down low.

At 174 whp you shouldnt have any trouble launching if the shit is realy to short then put in a 3.9 or 3.6 rear end. will be your cheapest option

Power numbers have changed a bit since then, and I'm currently 210lbs of torque at 3100 rpm...

pdexta 08-14-2009 11:38 AM

Have you tried making a few passes on the hankooks? My car launches very hard on street tires. I'd be scared to put anything stickier on for fear of blowing up a tranny/diff/axle.

chokeasphyxia 08-14-2009 05:49 PM

2nd gear burnout = win

ARTech 08-14-2009 08:29 PM

Lose the front sway bar and use soft rear springs.

tyson87 08-15-2009 09:18 AM

on the street i used my hankooks and they spin so easily, i will try diff things at the track on the 21st to see whats up.

Noob here, I get the rear springs why lose the front sway bar??

magnamx-5 08-15-2009 01:18 PM

so your tires can come down further if the front end lifts this can translate into more contact and the ability to steer. Wich could be handy

buffon01 08-15-2009 02:10 PM

Thanks ....

ARTech 08-15-2009 04:13 PM

yes, and also more front lift = more rear squat = more weight transfer to the rear where traction is needed.

buffon01 08-15-2009 04:25 PM

^^^^ I guess this is what the first day of class in DragRACING 101 would be....lol

Mickey Thompson has a line of drag-slicks for 13" wheels: https://mickeythompsontires.com/drag-tires/et-drag . Probably the usual mass retailers (Summit and Jegs) sell them, Tire Rack, from what I gather, does not.

1 day short of a 10 year thread bump.

Yikes.

I didn't see the "2009", It looked like "2019", and the dates almost exactly matched. The gentleman had a quick, specific question - which after much banter, nobody else answered. I offered a specific, actionable answer... which led to negative reputation. If such are the logistics of this site, what are the implications?

tyson87 08-18-2019 02:33 PM

i was just talking about this thread at work.
i wanted to show my coworker the pic scott made....
