Drag Racing Setup

Anyone in this forum have any experience getting a Miata setup to legally run faster than 11.49 at the strip? I'm specifically curious about what is available for a flywheel shield, driveline safety loop and roll bar/cage that will meet the current NHRA rules. The roll bar seems to be very simple, all I will need to do with my boss frog bar is to add the proper back plates and remove some more foam from the seat. When it comes time for a full cage, I may stop there because I want to do this without destroying a very nice street car. The other items I'm really curious if anyone has any ideas? The tech at my local track refers me to the book and says to build it around that and they will decide if it's up to their standard. These are simple things to do, but before I go trying to reinvent the wheel I thought I would ask so I don't end up doing it twice. Even searching around m.net for some of the well known faster guys, there isn't much out there. Any ideas?

Check the timeslip thread here. You could PM the leaders to see if they have any helpful suggestions. In the PM direct them to this thread so any help they have will be helpful to everyone!

I'm certified to go faster then that. But all of my stuff is custom. Too bad I don't want anyone local to see my car. You guys would jizz your pants if you could see it.

Sounds like you know what you need, just trying to find a place to get it. Why not just make it yourself? Do you have the rule book?

Do you already have enough motor/drivetrain to run those speeds? Curious about the setup.

As for the OPer, Try PMing Apexonyou i know he drags his car and is most likely looking into similar setups as you now.

Wait, Have you changed your screen name? I looked through your build thread and it looks like my old turbo setup. If it is, you definately have enough power.

It's just another V8 Miata:). Once the cat is out of the bag around here, I'll PROBABLY post pictures. But, I don't expect it to be driving for another 3 months. But, it still looks sick just sitting there in my garage.

I changed the screen name so it would be the same as on some other forums that I'm on. Yes that's your old setup in my build thread and it's a very capable one at that. Unfortunately, it will be for sale very soon because my wife bought me a completely different setup for Christmas. I will be running a 4 cyl this season just to see how quick I can be before I drop something much bigger in.

I have the 2008 rule book and I'm using that as a guide. Most of it is surprisingly simple, but I just thought I would ask to avoid fabricating something that is easily available somewhere that I'm not looking.

JayL, what was your old SN?

JayMX5 is what I used previously for all miata related forums.

Just to help increase the communal pressure for pics I'll drop this quote from the other forum.

"Look, I'm not some googly eyed 20yr old, I'm damn near 40 and I had heard about Mikes car for a few months and every now and again he'd let a few choice pics leak on Miataturbo.net but when I dropped off my car at his house last week (he';s doing my engine build) I almost crapped my pants! Literally! And MMonster when it's done it will weigh just under 2000lbs and have just over 2000rwhp. Quite a nice Hp to Weight ratio don't you think? I know most of the specs but like I said, I'm not at liberty to say, sorry. You all act as if you've never seen or heard of a Pro Street drag car before. He's building it to drive on the street but not daily obviously and it will be at my next Turbo Miata Day in February, parachute and all. He wouldn't even let me take pics of it but when my wife (who knows nothing about cars) saw it she exclaimed, "Holy Sh*t"! You can all just rack your brains trying to figure out what kind of motor and forced induction it may take to get that kind of power and if you would like to see it come by in February."

:eek5:

if this is confirmed, I will shit my pants literally

Jay most of the things you need to pass tech at 11.5 you will have to do on your own. As far as tranny shields/driveshaft loops, I personally have never come across anything Miata specific but it wouldn't be horribly hard to make on your own. Is your current bar the proper size? I just sold my HDSDD because it was too thin (I think it has to be 1.75"). You should make a list from that 08 rule book because I don't have it yet. :)

I don't think you can get that much power out of anything with less then 350 C.I. that would last more then a couple passes. Possibly like a stroked Windsor 351 punched and bored to 408 or so? Possibly a Chevrolet 350 stroked/bored to the same displacement range? Dart aluminum block most certainly for the weight, some massive turbo with a big hit of nitrous. I'm intrigued, I could never imagine that much horsepower coming out of that engine bay, even if you cut the shock towers in half and mounted the front suspension in a really weird way I think a Windsor block with performance heads would be very hard pressed to fit and thats without a proper turbo... unless its a tube Miata... I bet that is whats going on then you can use a 427 or a 500+ CI monster motor, and make all the power you care for.

As to the original poster if you need manufacturing/design I can do hardcore design for another 10 days, just get it to me quick and I"ll see if I can set up the majority before things start in. Then all I have to do is follow the manufacturing of the print.

johndoe 01-05-2009 03:36 AM

yeah, i would imagine it is a miata in name only at this point.

I didn't even think about the tubing for the bar. It's a boss frog clearview maxx so I will have to take some more measurements, but I planned on having a full cage done if I can keep it somewhat street friendly. Let me know your email address and I can send you the 08 rule book. It's 1.83 mb so it isn't too big.

Me too. I thought about ballistic cloths, but decided against, since it might heat up the transmission.
