is it dumb to spend $6k on turbo bits?
bell s2, clutch, 3" exhaust, and link or xede. Every time I get worked up to spend the cash, I get cheap and afraid.

It hurts to think that I only paid $1600 for the car to start with.
|
Spend the money and get the stuff. Long as your install is done right you'll have one hell of a reliable car with one badass turbo setup.
|
spend 3k instead of 6k....
put the other 3k into something useful. |
How the fuck are you at 6k? You can easily make 280whp with $1k.

LOL:gay: I WOULD LOVE TO SEE IT,:bigtu: |
I think I spent a little over $2k for my whole setup. A little more here and there and I could have had even more power. I got the turbo for a good price though.
|
if you spend it dont think about it.
I try not to think about how much I spent on my old car |
I'm paying a little over $3100 for my setup, and that includes a Megasquirt, $600 in gauges including a wideband, and a clutch. If you add a link (+600), a ball bearing turbo (+750), you're still $1500 short.
OTOH, BEGI's kits are nice, and you'll have a reliable-ass car. If the car is prepped mechanically and reliable now, then I say do it. You won't regret it, I guarantee. :) |
1 grand 280whp? Just a fucken ECU costs 500 and a clutch costs atleast 3-400. And we havent even included the turbo or exhaust injectors or anything yet id love to see this done for a grand. Heck Id sell my miata and buy a 1 grand miata and do it.

If you dont want to do any welding of pipes or any fab work, the Begi S2 is a great choice, so if that is you, go for it. You really will not regret it in the long run. Also the new systems dont have the annoying bov setup that the old style has (like mine) and does not snake the turbo --> intercooler charge pipe in front of the crank pulley (also like mine). The new style looks a nice improvement overall.
If you want to save some money though and retain quality where it counts, why not get a t3 manifold from begi with a tial wastegate, rebuild a t3 with the compressor of your choice ( i dont know what options are available), custom downpipe and exhaust, Ebay intercooler, and custom piping. After that it is your choice for engine management and injectors. My vote goes to AEM, Megasquirt, or Link depending on your confidence level. It would come out to probably about 1k for manifold, turbo, and wastegate, another 1k for the intercooler setup. The rest is up to you and could be anywhere between about 500 and 2k depending on what you want to do with the electronics side of things. Also if you couldnt tell, i sorta estimated the totals and I might be off a bit but for sure you would save some money going this way. |
My bill this year for my car is Cdn $ 20,000.00 (not including the car).
Not all is for the turbo though. BEGi S3 / Link ACT Clutch dual feed fuelrail Wideband Torsen Re-build the motor and tranny Enthuzia 3" dual exhaust 6UL 15x8 wheels with RS-2 New top, carpet & leather seats Some gauges It's only money. But have been saving for five years to do this project. If you plan on keeping the car it is worth it but if the car is just your flavour of the month/year it is not worth it to spend more that 2 or 3k. My Miata will only be traded in on a walker :) |
you track the car, hustler. keep that in mind.
a sorted kit will be less likely to fall apart than a 1000 dollar kit. the track is a rough place to be. my first DIY turbo experience on the track proved that not all exhaust fasteners are created equal. but damn does an open downpipe sound bitchin. (the rest of the exhaust was just hangin' out.) got some wicked backfires too. |
if you guys could get a used mp62, with a new split second fuel/time controller with 550's , and a tdr fmic for $2600, would you go that route?
|
just do it hustler anything will be faster than stock atleast it is a mp62 you will be one of the first running 1 on a 1.6 with Elepha of FFS being the other. Hope you considered that :D sorry i had to put that in there i know it makes it harder. MP62 is a very nice blower and perfect for 90% of the miata HP goals people set.
