Dyon'ed our 99 today

We took our new (to us) 99 Miata over to Cory of Wicked HP for a Dyno today. We also wanted him to inspect the car for safety since Sue and I know very little about turbo's. Everything looked good and we have 291 hp to the rear wheels in 4th gear at 105 MPH. Next weekend we'll be running the 3.2 mile course at Spring Mountain Raceway in Purhump, Nv.

UrbanSoot 09-12-2009 10:45 PM

sounds like a fun ride

18psi 09-12-2009 10:53 PM

details and pictures would be nice

samnavy 09-12-2009 11:50 PM

Yah, how about a spec sheet/build list and some dyno graphs... and some pics of that bad ride!

Jack,
You should post your location in your profile and details of y'all's car in your signature.

I'm sorry that i can't tell you much about our turbo. I've ordered some books and for right now I'm depending on what my friends are telling me. Since my wife is the driver I'm mainly concerned with just how safe and how well the car was put together. I'm pleased with the workmanship and I'm installing fresh rotors and Hawk pads this week. Seats are installed correctly and the harnesses are fresh in in date. I've numbered the car with Sue's favorite number as was all of her race cars and it looks like were going racing next weekend. After reading some of the TurboMiata posts I am concerned with the car overheating on the 3.2 mile course, but my dyno guy said it should be fine. I guess we'll find out soon enough. I'm adding some pics I took yesterday in the garage.

nice, huge turbo with a baby turbine.

A/R does not dictate the turbine size. When did you die and become turbo "god"? Did your mechanic tell you that little zinger?

A T3 .48 a/r turbine housing is equivalent, if not greater, than a .63 T25 A/R. Do the math.

Furthermore, the turbine itself is physically much larger than your rinky-dink 2860 turbine. (63.5mm vs your baby pacifier 53.8mm)

Hell, I even have a larger turbine than you on my stock 1.6L, tough guy. His turbo is more or less a GT3076. I doubt there is a need for a .63 A/R housing on a turbine that large and motor this small.

I also doubt he posted for 3 years about how much of a n00b he was before he just went and made it happen.

291 whp with an emanage and a 2 bar map sensor? Yikes.

Full_Tilt_Boogie 09-13-2009 04:16 PM

Hmmm, Blow through AFM, I dont think ive ever seen that on a miata

I sure liked that big print. But I think someone has a case of the Mondays.... a little early?

Nice numbers!

Why do you say that?
Tons of other cars use it.

UrbanSoot 09-13-2009 10:08 PM

not sure i would want any kind of 10-years-old plastic pieces with small sensors that always see pressure applied to them sitting next to my throttle body. god forbid something would go wrong and you suck part of that thing into your engine!

18psi 09-13-2009 10:21 PM

bunch of 700+whp subarus and evo's use them all the time.

UrbanSoot 09-13-2009 10:45 PM

blow-through? not sure about that. i have seen at least a dozen 600+whp stis and evos in person and i dont recall any of them being blow-through

yes absolutely. Lots of them upgrade to a blow through maf on large turbo setups. Its very common. Its either that or speed density, and that is only now getting more popular.

i still wouldnt want to do it with miata maf. its a piece of plastic. on wrx, its seems like they only have sensor part going in there

Full_Tilt_Boogie 09-14-2009 01:39 AM

I wouldnt be concerned about it failing.

Running it blow through actually makes a lot of sense from a piggy back tuning perspective. draw through it quickly becomes maxed out on flow, so youre essentially on the highest load cells of the stock ecu's map and simply ramping up the fuel of that map with the MAPP sensor signal. But if you make it blow through youre still able to accuratly meter velocity and simply compensate with MAP.

With the mild 'tunes' many people have on their standalones this kind of setup could be nearly as good, with the exception of the limited injector size compensation...

magnamx-5 09-14-2009 01:55 AM

lol damn scot you been alil grouchy or what? Pitcrew your setup is very nice and i have no doubts it is an awesome ride.

zoomin 09-14-2009 03:51 AM

There is a local Festiva that has been converted to RWD using an Escort GT motor and Toyota solid rear axle, 60 trim t3 and a blow through AFM. It runs solid 12's in the 1/4.

i made that assumption too wen i had to change the maf out of the legacy. but theyr actually made of metal. it just looks like plastic cuz of the weird colour. for one year 99' they did make em out of plastic. but nowa days they could be all made of plastic since they change the intake mani to plastic.

Braineack 09-16-2009 09:08 AM

do you know how easy it would be to move the MAF from the charge pies to the intake?

Then it wouldn't be blow through, would it? Blow through will give more accurate charge temperature and allow use of VTA BOV. Whether or not those benefits are being used in this car (Tial BOV is probably VTA) can be debated.

What size injectors? I thought the Emanage was limited in injector size. Could be an Emanage Ultimate I guess.
