Electric Power Steering
Has anyone on here done the Saturn Vue / Chevy Equinox Electric Power Steering conversion? Im looking for pictures of brackets and how it fit. I did find one write up online already. But that was in a gutted E-production looking car.
Because my car is K swapped, there is no room fro the hydraulic ports on the steering rack ( I would have just done the MR2 electric over hydraulic setup). And with my steering angle kit, the steering is ultra heavy at lock, when you want to come back off lock you have to really use some muscles. The best thing I have seen is this electric setup. |

The Mazda2 has electric steering and the rack might work for you.

Another option is a Toyota MR2 electric pump .The problem with Saturn/GM,small car setups is that the electric assist is part of the steering column. You would have to combine a Saturn column with a Miata steering shaft for it to work. They are also bulky and it would take up a lot of space underneath your dash area. All the Saturn setups are is just an electric motor and a gear combined with an electronic module that monitors steering angle and receives input from the EBCM for vehicle speed so it can control steering assist based on speed and angle. You don't want excessive assist when travelling at 60mph so the duty cycle of the electric motor is less than when you're sitting still and need to turn.
The MR2 pumps are smaller stand alone units usually mounted in the bonnet (front trunk area). |
I would love to do hydraulic, the problem is I need to cut and relocate the hydraulic ports on the rack to fit in this (picture is of andy’s car but mine is the same) https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...f05536812.jpeg |
I cut the mount off the miata column and stitch welded it to the prius column in same location. Used some cheap steel straps to support the rear of the prius piece, then bastardized the prius and miata steering shaft halves together. I'll get some fresh pictures of how it looks now later this week, I took some of the early steps though.

Seems like all the rack retrofits im seeing are in race cars (Exocet) and are not using the factory key ignition and signal stalks.

Took this one today post welding of the miata mount to prius column. The prius upper telescopes on huge splines, so you can adjust it to match the miata column perfectly then tack it in place, this way everything literally fits the exact same on either column. Here's the side by side.
