Default Stock oil gauge going to zero

When I brake (not even that hard) my stock oil gauge in the instrument cluster goes to zero. What gives? It goes right back up to normal (a bit higher than 1/2, more like 3/4) and then goes back down when I brake again. It sometimes goes down and stays there for a few seconds while my car is at a full stop and then goes back up when I start off.

Has anyone had this problem? Could I need a new oil pump? Or should I just try changing my oil and filter(not that old). Could my stock gauge be going all screwy?

This problem is quite disconcerting seeing as I'm going turbo in a week or so.

Check all the connections to your sending unit and gage really good, they may be vibrating loose sometimes maybe? other than that im not sure other than the pump?

Lol, thanks for making me feel like a complete idiot. I just checked the oil level and it doesn't even show up on the stick, I guess its time to top it off! I'll change the filter and the oil when I install the turbo, but I'm glad I caught that when I did!

Thanks for the help

If this was m*.net I would post a link to the thread here <G>.

Don't worry, if I listed all the stupid **** I did to try and kill my car it would be a long list.

So, since we are talking about oil pressure let me ask you guys this:

- 20K miles on a rebuilt 200K engine
- no idea if the oil pump is new
- oil pressure has always been low
- sending unit changed - no difference
- gauge cluster change - no difference
- I have not checked for resistance on the wire between the unit and gauge

I'm pretty sure that my pressure is actually low. Should I be worried about this? I only put 1K miles a year on the car but it is a hard 1K. I run Mobil One 10W-30

Everyone usually expects the problem to be electrical first.....wonder why that is?

i've had the same oil gauge problem and it wasn't the oil level, check all of the lines and check the gauge with another one under the hood (been told they could go bad after a while) also the temperature seems to have something to do with mine.

I put in some oil and lots of bad noises stopped and the gauge stopped ******* about. I'm happy .

But... There was practically no oil in the car! I had to put in 2 bottles of oil to get it back up to the dipstick's mark. Could this have done some lasting damage? I'm thinking of getting a compression test done, not just for this but also because I'm putting on a turbo. I just hope this hasn't messed up my valvetrain or something.
