Easy question for the day.... Not for me apparently. Is there a gasket between the oil pump and block? Can't find anything in the manual that says anything about a gasket or RTV.

My 1994 Mazda service manual shows no gasket. I talked to Mazda motorsports and they said no gasket on the '94. RTV, o-ring, but no gasket. FM says the same thing. No gasket on the mazda parts breakdown. weird.

Gotcha. I got the FSM part but got thrown off by the PSD. Anyway, upon looking closely at the oil pump there really is no need for the gasket and in fact if the gasket was too thick it could reduce the effectiveness of the o-ring. I'll do a very thin coat of RTV and be done with it.

I recommend using some Indian Head gasket shellac.

make sure you use the oil resistant RTV, as there are many different kinds. The oil resistant is black i believe.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I was reading in my '95 FSM about replacing this gasket. When I took the motor apart, I cannot for the life of me remember taking one off, nor can I find one in the labeled bags of everything I took off. But here's the picture of the FSM page:



Anyway, get a gasket, leave it off, or use some RTV?

There isn't a gasket for the oil pump to block. I used RTV on mine when I rebuilt my motor 2 years ago without a problem. Recently I picked up a tube of Toyota Gasket Maker and it seems to be a better option than RTV b/c it stays more pliable.

The gasket pointed out in your picture is for the water pump.

Hate to bring this back from the dead but I was searching for opinions on this and found this thread......That's right noobers, SEARCH!!!

Anyway, the pic shows two gaskets. I ordered part number B621-14-113 directly from Mazda and got the thin paper gasket that goes between the oil pump and block. Just wanting to make sure our archives have accurate information for the next person.

1.6 is a gasket. 1.8 is RTV and an o-ring at the high-pressure port.

hmmmmm, I ordered a gasket for 1.8 and they sent it, it fits?
I know the last couple engines (1.8s) I have only used Hondabond and have not had any trouble. When ordering the final seals needed for MY engine I asked about the OP gasket and they gave me that part number and it fits well. Now Sav has me second guessing myself. My gut tells me to go with the known entity and use the RTV.

In general, this is the right answer. However, I've "heard" that some of the early 1.8s used a gasket.

Safest approach is to look at the back of your oil pump. Inspect the surface that meets the engine block.

If it looks like this, you need a gasket (ignore the circles please):


If it looks like this, you need an O-ring and oil-resistant RTV:


General rule, surfaces that take gaskets are always flat. Surfaces that take RTV will have a machined groove. And, obviously, an O-ring needs a machined groove as well.

Mine was milled for the o-ring as well as the sealing flange for the RTV and that is why I was researching it myself. I will use the Hondabond with confidence.
