Exhaust ?s

My exhaust is real rapsy...I'm cheap/poor and I'm thinking of ways to quiet it down. Would putting a glasspack in front of my muffler be a bad idea? I'm N/A right now but that wouldn't impede flow once I was turbocharged would it?

Its a full 2.5" system with a bit of an exhaust leak...and a test pipe...and a dynamax muffler. Once I get the turbo/downpipe in it SHOULD sound a lot better...but just looking for idea until then.

Find a resonator from an S2000, or RSX, or even a Toyota Celica.Have it welded after your cat before your Muffler, or even in place of your muffler. It will quiet it down and get rid of the rasp. Ive seen it done on an 02, and it made a nice clean noise. (Removed OEM muffler, and just replaced it with a tiny Celica GTS resonator, bent some pipes and hung it. Saved a good bit of weight in the rear on my friends 02.)

It wouldn't be a bad idea, but go with a small round muffler instead, like a magnaflow. The design of glasspacks isn't smooth on the inside and would cause turbulence possibly backpressure.

miatamania 08-01-2007 01:29 PM

thats what I originally wanted...and I think I already priced something from you a while ago, but would that restrict flow?

EDIT: "Additional Information
The 4" round body muffler/resonator features the same internal straight-through construction, which can be used in conjunction with a muffler to reduce sound or independently as an aggressive sounding"

You still selling them Scott?

Braineack 08-01-2007 01:37 PM

no, magnaflow's wont restrict flow at all. Glasspacks will.

vs.

see the tiny louvers that redirect the flow....

you should be able to find cheap as resonators though, with the same design as the magnaflow....like Thrush or even summit racing.

unfortunatly I don't sell any part anymore. But email steve (at) magnaflowonline.com and ask for a deal. (dont mention me :gay:)

DOOD just go to summit and get a dynomax bullet race muffler for $39.99.

thats a bit smaller than the magnaflow too. Hell...maybe the dynomax products will work well together :)

The exhaust is mild steel...a shop should just be able to weld this right in wont they?

Thanks for the learning guys :)

curly 08-01-2007 02:27 PM

yes they will be able to weld it in

I had a 2.5" cat, and 2.5" magnaflow muffler with my turbo, and thats damn near stock noise levels, maybe a titch louder. so if you can wait, I'd just do nothing until you get the turbo in, and then decide if you want to do anythign to the exhaust, if you want a system that's a little louder than stock, the configuration you have + turbo should be good.

y8s 08-01-2007 02:53 PM

well for comparison I run the 3" version of that "resonator", cat, and a big fat magnaflow straight-thru muffler. my car is definitely quiet off-boost.

When I got my testpipe put in it made my car alot more raspy. Maybe try using a cat instead? If you still had your old cat it would fit your criteria of "cheap"

miatamania 08-01-2007 03:59 PM

I traded the old cat for a steering wheel. I got rid of it because it was too small to mate up to the downpipe anyway. IT did make it slightly more raspy and a bit louder.

I didn't want to have to buy a new cat because I don't need to have one and loud isn't my first priority over sounding decent.

Lucky... I wouldn't have a cat if we weren't required.

www.enthuzacar.com

I like there stuff

miatamania 08-02-2007 02:00 PM

so do I...but its rather expensive and I already have a 2.5" exhaust.

I just ordered the dynomax bullet muffler and should be here tommorrow or saturday. Maybe this will help out a bit :)

Pitlab77 08-02-2007 11:26 PM

enthuza expensive??? For pre-made its great.

miatamania 08-03-2007 09:48 AM

yeah, I mean, I already have a 2.5" catback...it works, I'm just trying to quiet it...If I'm going to buy another exhaust it should be 3" once I'm turbo'd.

miatamania 08-04-2007 12:09 PM

Went and had it put on yesterday, didn't get screwed to bad, but I really want to learn how to weld now. Car sounds a TON better, still a bit raspy down low, but quieter and smoother above 4k. Once the piping is the same turbo back and the exhaust leak is gone, it ought to sound pretty good.

Thanks guys, I'll try to get a sound clip.

I bought the 3". Welds look great, and jason thinks it will fit. Hopefully my 3" exhuast on a 1.6 car with a 99 motor and bell dp worked out on his jig.

Yah. Trying to compete against their prices is a bitch.

Pitlab77 08-05-2007 12:42 AM

yeah especially for their turbo exhaust
