Facing issues with my car's timing

Ok guys, I need some help. For the record, I never checked my car's timing before installing the turbo kit and COPs. After I installed the COPs and began trying to tune the car I got a timing light and I get a reading of 60 to 65* which I know is completely wrong but my car is running fine. I took my car to the shop and asked the electrician to take a reading. His reading was the same as the one I had gotten.

I'm trying to find out what I may have done wrong when I installed the COPs in my car and would appreciate some help from the electronic wizards of the forum.

I'm at a loss; I really can't figure what's going on. What are my options?

Any assistance will be much appreciated.

Rafa

So the timing light is reading wrong? Have you tried using a spark plug wire in between the cop and the spark plug to get a reading?

How so Sam?

What we did was take the spark plug out of cylinder 1 out and physically moved the piston by moving the crank to what we assumed would be 10* BTDC and made a mark with some liquid paper in that place on the crank. After doing that, we got the 60* - 65* reading :vash:

Ok, that's not how you establish base timing. You have to do like sam said and add a sparkplug wire between the COP and the plug, and then put your timing light clamp on the sparkplug wire and run the engine, and note timing. Doing it by guessing what 10* is isn't how it's done.

why didnt you move #1 to a true TDC and make a mark there on the pulley? no guess work.

im assuming that's the issue. your pulley has no mark.

or do not have the degree markings on the plastic shield?

yes, my pulley has no mark, or at least it's not in the correct location. I assume that was something that happened when I had my timing belt and water pump changed. I'll have to check the plastic shield to see if there are any markings.

I'll also do the wire from the COP to the sparkplug of cylinder 1.

Many thanks,

Rafa

Many thanks Sam . You're suggestion did the trick. When we followed your suggestion this morning we were able to finally read the car's timing. Fwiw, it was too advanced.

YOU DA MAN! I like seeing your posts during the day! BTW, I still have no clue about how to send you the pics of my 73 T/A via pm. I also wanted to send you a pic of a 1971 750cc Honda bike. Maybe some day.

Magna, you asked a question about FTA in another thread and I left you a post to contact me if you needed help.

Best regards,

Rafa

That's great that worked for you. I had told you to do the same back on Jan. 28th in an email.
So how does it run now?

Hey Chad, never got that email. Things like that happen with my local ISP; sorry.

The car pulls really well and I've got the clutch finally working fine. The only issue I still have has to do with a little too much fuel going in when decelarating. Got some additional reading to do. My timing was way too advanced. Now finally, even my temps are beginning to come down . I never mentioned it before but it got to a point that when I turned the car's A/C on the car would begin to get incredibly hot even with both fans on. Now I'm only waiting for Emilio's Qmax system to finish this part.

BTW, I'm still running only 8psi.

Many thanks for all your assistance.

Best regards,

Rafa
