Fastback

Someone tag him in.
I know there are a bunch of folks here that would love a fastback. Ryansmoneypit comes to mind. |
Copied this from clubroadster
http://clubroadster.net/vb_forum/images/icons/icon1.gif Re: New Lightyear Miata Fastback We are getting very close now. I had some small pin holes that I thought would be filled when I painted it. Seeing as I want it right, it's had a full rub down after filling the pin holes, and is being repainted in a booth professionally. I took orders locally for a batch of 10. And once these are done and the process is running smooth, I will open up a run for everyone. We will look into shipping options later, but the box is about 1450x450x1450. I think it's a bit smaller than this, but you can quote that size for shipping purposes to get a rough idea. From Melbourne Australia. I haven't finalised pricing as yet, waiting on all the parts and labour to be added up once we start. |
I'm guessing it's going to be in the 1200-1500 range shipped to your door stateside.
That kinda sucks but... it is what it is. |
That sucks?!? I'd pay that.

Price for the group buy is/was ~AUD2200, you do the math on the exchange rate, and add freight.

No shit.
A semi-rare colored oem top might go for more. |

I guess I should just pounce on one if I see it in the 800 ish range.
Aren't the tops 1500 new from mazda Motorsports? In any event, curious what the final product will run. |
I've checked in on this too over the years.I never thought he would finish tweeking it. I think it's the best looking fb out there...too bad I have an NA

Yeah if he sells them for that much I'll definitely go for it right away, I was planning on getting a fastback sometime this year anyway
|
Gross. I am not a fan of that fast back. It's to smooth flowing and doesn't quite match the shorter curves of the NB. I wouldn't rock that if he gave one to me free and pre painted.
|
that's a really nice design but i'm concerned that curved rear window will add a LOT to the cost. Even curving lexan to spec is annoyingly expensive.
but for $1500 unpainted? yes please. shipping may kill that though |

but for $1500 unpainted? yes please. shipping may kill that though The pricing in this thread is whack too. The initial group buy is for local buyers at $2189AUD (~$1670USD) including windows, seals etc in unpainted gelcoat. Add freight to get that to the US (prob another...$500-1000USD).... and I think you're looking at $2-2.5k at a minimum. I can't imagine the price won't go up either (like CCPs fastback has) once the actual expenses / labour involved in producing them is factored in. |
CCP Fabrication makes one stateside already.
|
NB in the works? Will it fit better than the atrocity of a hardtop i have on my car presently?
|
Yes and what's the issue with yours now. I've had 3 hardtop from them with no issues
|
Terribly build quality, mostly in the area of "fitment." Mold wasn't right or something. Physically cannot be adjusted/installed to come close to closing up the gaps (i can stick entire fingers in them) between back edge of door window and the top. I bought the "street kit" and installed per Wes's video. Didn't work. Got raped for 2 more sets of seals from Wes as i attempted to tweak fitment by installing the seals in different ways, which improved some, but still isn't acceptable for anything that anyone can sell a "street kit" in good conscience for. Wes's suggestion was to make some wood shims and use wood screws to fasten them to the window frame of the top to bring the seal closer to the window. LOL NOPE.
In the context of a "race part only" it's fine, and i don't regret it for that, specifically. It just sucks knowing that every time it rains i'm getting standing water inside my car with it's hard top with "street kit." Oh, and the fitment at top of windows is pretty bad. Hangs down too low. Can't open/close the doors with the windows up if it's colder than 45 degrees outside. I'm fairly certain mine is an exception, i saw a white one at MATG this past year that was great. I'd like a fastback and would be willing to pay for it, but i don't want to blow $2350 + shipping and then deal with the issues i'm seeing now. If you've done 3 of them i'd love for you to take a gander at this thing at MATG this year? Hell i will ply you with beer and money if you can make it not suck. |
Lol, find me at the gap I'll look at it. I'll be in the LFX ND, don't need money but I'll drink your beer. Sounds like most of your issue is that Wes represented something as a street kit that was never intended to be that. Paul intended the hardtops to be for track cars, and as light as they are sealing for street use would be very difficult. Factory hardtops are heavy and very rigid which makes them easier to seal. The lightweight hardtops were intended more so fo aero benefits and to keep the sun and rain off of ya while on track, but not necessarily dry

Beer is a go, then. I'll be getting there on Tuesday, driving the obnoxious and gross Purple NB1 again. There's many things i wanted to talk to you guys about, regardless. :) |
I think we are arriving Tuesday as well. Hit us up, we are staying at Fontana
|
Yep so are we. (Myself, Vteckiller2000, Flier129) We should all grab dinner and drinks at Tapoco that night or Wednesday. :)
|
Appreciate the offer,I'll let you know
|
I know he has a build thread etc already, but looks like production is on for the NB fastbacks and NA's are in process if not ready to go as well.

It looks like Lightyear Composites is trying to organize shipments in bulk to the US if they get enough interest. I'm going to email David@lightyearcomposites.com.au for a Bay Area shipment. I think we could get one of the local shops to host the shipment if we ever get enough interest. It looks like a good deal, especially compared to the ridiculous prices around here for an OEM top.
BEAVIS and Lightyear both are on this forum and running them. Any comments? |
This link has probably been posted already somewhere here, it's a long thread detailing the trials and tribulations of having high standard small scale production done on sub-contract (link takes you to start of current production, feel free to read back though). The good news is that Dave now seems to have found a viable manufacturing arrangement, and the fastbacks are beginning to escape - some have actually been sighted in the 'burbs! Lightyear's CF fastbacks . I'd suggest a dedicated thread soliciting EoIs (after you get a ballpark price delivered Bay area), and see what comes out of the woodwork. If it gets enough legs, Sean's GB threads might be a useful model for closing it out. You will need to think about what happens then - on-ward transport, and how would that work?; assembly/fitting or simply collection?; etc.
I think in getting to this point Dave has displayed amazing determination, I'd love to see his efforts rewarded by these popping up all over the place so I am happy to boost this along a bit. Who knows, one may even end up on my car yet ... |
