Fastest Miata
What is the top speed of a miata?
Stock they are aerodynamically limited, but most of us are not anymore. At what speed do we redline 5th gear with various trans/rear combinations? |
By the way, I am assuming a stock redline of 7250ish, but I would assume a taller-than-stock gearing combination will give the highest top speed if it is an option.
The real question is: How fast has any miata ever gone under "its own" power? |
I've heard very high indicated speeds (speedo can be wildly inaccurate from car to car, mine is 10 percent off), but 140 actual speed is what most people have reported with the stock rear end. If you raised your rev limiter it would be higher, obviously.
With longer rear gears, I imagine you could go significantly faster, maybe 170, assuming you had the power. Stock nose gets super floaty at high speeds though. |

Hahaha mine was slow with its own power when I first got it I was wondering how fast it would go. I got it up to 110 and it pretty much stopped there, well I was slowly going faster but it probably would of took me another minute to get from 110 to 115 so I just let off. Now with the turbo I can pull strong all the way to red line in 5th, its about 130 I think, I'm not really paying to much attention to the spedo at that speed. I have a torson but I'm to lazy to look up my gear ratio so I'm not sure what it is.

Blocking off the airflow at the front hurts ground clearance (obviously), but it solves the floaty problem pretty convincingly IMO. Emilio knows 1000x more about this area than me though. I'm basically copying his setup one step at a time.
|
I maxed out the gears in mine. A little passed 145. It felt surprisingly stable when I did it too. Though I had a pretty decent suspension set-up.
|
i can do 130 at thunderhill raceway on the front straight, im not quite sure i want to go much faster in a miata.
That's with a 6 speed & 3.9 diff. |
I can (used to be able to?) get to the limiter in 6th in about 45 seconds.
|
Fastest I've had mine was an indicated 135. Who knows how accurate that was, either way I doubt I had much left. The C5 really started walking away at that point.

attaching my super spiffy spreadsheet that calculates such things. It is probably full of errors so use at your own risk, but my car can go 160.5814909 mph:)

Gave a heart attack to a 911 owner once when I was on his tail until 210km/hre... then the fun ended and he pulled away :(

I've found Flyin Miata's gear calculator to be quite helpful. Flyin' Miata : Technical info : Gearing calculator
My speedometer reads dead on after I swapped the 4.30s gears for 4.10s, apparently it read about 5% fast originally. I'm sure my car could make it to 147 (redline in 5th), but I have little desire to take it there. |
Ive done almost 140 at T hill, don't know what RPM though. The big scoop seemed to make the front of my car really stable, no problems at all, however my brake bias made the rear float right before turn in, that was sketchy.
|
as long as I'm faster by the next braking zone, im happy.
|
I got up to 7000rpm a few times in 5th with 160-170whp. With the stock 4.3 rear.
I got it over 130 a week ago, losing to a modded 06 Stang GT. |
137mph on my garmin last weekend playing with a gtr. lol

With 430 gears I can only hit about 127 and I'm out of RPM's.
I would'nt want to go any faster. The car gets squirrly. If yo9u want me to do over a 130 I need a Racebike. I've hit 189 on a ZX10R. It probably would of done 195 but the timming pulled back. |
My NA starts to run out of breath passing the 110ish then i run out of road O_o or some asshole assumes that the left lane is for cruisisn and gets in front of me
