Few quick cuts and my oil cooler will be able to breathe...

A few days ago I mounted my FMIC and Moss oil Cooler like so:

I was kinda disappointed at how the oil cooler was mounted and not being able to get fresh air because of the small opening mazda used in the front bumper. It took me a few days but it finally came to me.

What do you guys think? Should i put my bumper under the knife? The new grill will put air directly on the oil cooler and I like how it looks....

I like it, I've been thinking about doing something similar but using naca ducts enstead.

viperormiata 10-24-2008 06:18 PM

Do it! Very soon I'll have to do the same. You could use a naca duct to make a very clean and tasteful air scooper.

Did a little messing around with photoshop and i think i like it a little higher up. It will still give sufficient air to the oil cooler. Lucky i used a dry erase marker to draw the thing on with.

I was just thinking NACA duct too, you know what they say about great minds...

EDIT - or, get a TSI and put it behind there, or try mounting it so that it peeks into the opening.

Oh i forgot to mention. The templete is from our BP 1.8L brother. The good old escort GT. Printed out a lifesize picture of the grill. Decided on how many slots would be sufficient and then rescanned, reversed direction of tilt and transferred to the car. I was thinking of an naca duct but this is well... cheaper because its free. I will get some black mesh for behind it so no pesky rocks find there way into my Tbelt from the protege valve cover i will be using.

Overall i like this style of cutout. I think it fits the car nicely. I may make a small duct and oil cooler shroud but that will be behind the scenes so to speak...

patsmx5 10-24-2008 09:57 PM

You want my opinion? "probably not". Well, I say before cutting up the bumper, see how it works the way it is. Or, build a little scooper thing to move air from the mouth area to the oil cooler. I dunno, I could find 10 different ways to do that before cutting up the bumper. But IMO it would look dumb cut up.

The car is fucking blue... Looks like smurf vomit or something. Not really concerned with looks. Function over form and this will function. If i use some type of duct i will be taking air away from the ic. If you look to my sig you will see the entire front grill is filled so there really isn't any room for that.

Wish I could have found this thread before, so I could suggest those 944 vents.

I don't think it looks bad.
If I did it. I would drill a hole in the center, and slowly work my way out it a razor blade.

Quick cutting will end up looking stupid. How cares if it takes al day as long as it looks good. I like the expanded metal for a basck side grill.

Good Luck!

There's another thread where he already did it. A DIY to escort vent.
