fifth gear grind

Just when all is well......Today on my 92 turbo on a rather spirited run tonight for the first time I am getting a grinding when engaging fifth gear. This grinding is not evident in any other gear change only fifth and it happens each time i went into fifth and has got me a bit miffed and worried.

I changed the transmission fluid a few weeks back and the gear change has been silky smooth since.

I checked my drive for any leaks and can see a a very small amount of dark oil.

Clutch slave cylinder was chnaged 3 years ago before turbo went on.

Any ideas guys? This has got me miffed.

Well it should be pretty apparent if the oil is coming from the slave or the tranny itself. So make sure it isn't the slave. If the slave is leaking your clutch resevoir should show missing fluid. If your fluid is low it could be causing the 5th gear grind. What kind of fluid did you fill it up with and how warm is it there? Does the grind only happen after you've warmed everything up?

Is this a noise on the change of gears or a noise when force is aplied in fifth gear. A sticking slave via a bad master or slave will cuase grinding on shifting, and the grinding under laod means gear and synchro wear is occuring, or mroe importantly a good bit of it has already occured ;)

the grind in fifth happens whether the car is warm or cold.

Have checked the clutch reservoir to see if the level is low but it is fine well 3/4 full anyway..????

The only way to get rid of it is to swap/repair the tranny. Its not the clutch, the slave, the hydraulics or any other culprit.

Its 5th gear inside the tranny.

yup had itconfirmed today.

Need to replace gearbox.:vash: Unless I can live with the notchy fifth gear.

Don't feel so bad, if I powershift into second I get a grind. Didn't use to be that way. I'd rather have 5th gear be funky since I never powershift into it.

Tabs my brotha, just leave it,there's no need to spend the money on a new tranny.

How often do you use 5th gear anyways.

tabs604 08-15-2007 03:43 AM

true. I dont use fifth very often and if i am on the motorway I never really have to downshift much.

I made some enquiries and low mile tranny's can be had for £50-£100 and then fitting around £100. So not too bad compared to my rear Torsen diff which cost mega bucks (£750) as they are so rare in the UK.

Tabs for that price you should purchase one just as a spare incase anything happens to your current tranny.

Oh BTW if your gonna buy a new tranny, may I suggest getting it polished before you install it.

Polished tranny=more bling,show points,girls,trophies,magazine covers.
