Finished my MSM turbo install in my 1994 M-Edition.

Had to do very little modifications to make this work; it’s smooth and simple power (and very quiet power) without a fuss.

I kept power steering and A/C, and used almost all the MSM charge pipes. Finished it up today and it runs like a champ. Using a first generation power card with a normally open pressure switch to short O2 signal to ground during boost, all in all, to have less than 500 dollars in this turbo install, which includes the 50 dollars I paid for the pressure switch and power card, I came out pretty good, and we can all agree it will still have better drivability than a MSM Miata with factory ECU.

As far as the exhaust went I used the OEM MSM downpipe with catalytic converter fitted to the OEM midpipe and muffler (NA cat already removed), the goal here for me isn’t loads of power, I already have that with my 10AE turbo, the goal is 140 rwhp and equivalence in torque, and factory appearance, well I got it out today, it runs a solid 6 psi to the redline, runs very, very well.

Any chance you have pics of how you ran the intercooler hoses? This does interest me

On the hot side there is a simple short 90 that I made hacking up the OEM MSM silver charge pipe connected to an 12-18 inch dayco 1.5 inch (or was it 1 3/4 flexible hose.)

everything on the cold side is pretty much oem MSM, it’s a bit of a trick getting the IAC hose ran, I opted to just drill and tap a 5/8’s 90 (3/8NPT) on the back of the intercooler and run that, stepping up to 3/4, flows more than enough to keep that IAC working.

Notice as well the 2 inch one hole strap that I used to support the cold side charge pipe, on the hot side I made use of two heavy duty tie-wraps. Charge pipes need some degree of support other than just floating in the engine bay being cantilevered off the throttle body, turbo, and intercooler, that greatly reduces the chance of down the road weakest link couplers giving away on you when you hit they bumpy road or sharp pitch.

With a little bit of reworking, I’m now confident that the oem fans will fit and work after all...

Reliably boosted for 500 dollars, you simply can’t beat that.

IFL this, props for thinking outside the box.

Thanks, and got the oem fans installed, I’m done. Everything fits and works perfect.

Ping me when you're ready to sell the kit. :)

Lol, nope it is staying. It’s a great turbo setup for someone who doesn’t have ambitions over 200rwhp.

The MSM turbo gets a lot of flack, but honestly the MSM’s ECU tune is entirely responsible for that, being that I have owned a 2004 MSM ten years ago, and that I did the same swap on my 10AE, the swap with a voodoo card runs better than that MSM did.

What are you doing for timing control or are you finding yo don't need any?

Lokiel 04-23-2020 10:19 PM

For $500 you've done a great job but I would recommend replacing the MSM intercooler pipes with aluminium ones, they're not stainless steel and will be rusted badly on the inside by now.
I'd hate to see what rust flakes on the coldside do when they go through the engine.

That's a great, OEM-reliable setup for $500!

How did you go about sourcing these parts? In my limited experience, MSM partouts are thin on the ground.
