Default stock temp gauge issues

My stock temp gauge stopped working. Every once in a while it will give me a good reading and then it drops all the way down. Any hints on a repair? The car is a '95. Thanks.

The full cold position indicated infinite resistance across the gauge, so you have a broken or intermittently connecting wire somewhere between the gauge cluster and the temp sensor itself. I would start by throwing a Multimeter on the sensor itself and check that it has an appropriate resistance. 183 ohms should put the needle right on C and 20 ohms right on H. If you warm the car up and then check the resistance of the sensor (disconnect the wire from it first) it should be somewhere between those values. If it is infinite, change the sensor. If it isn't start working your way back along the wire with the multimeter looking for a loss of continuity.
