Front Lip anyone???
I want to get a front lip for my Miata. I like the look of the factory "R package" front lip that attaches to the bottom of the front bumper, but want something slightly more dramatic maybe. I don't like the look of the "carbon fiber" ones you see on ebay and I am not sure if I like the glossy clear coat on those either. My uncle owns a full service fiberglass shop and has done everything from hot rod bodies, to amusement park slides and rides. He specializes in boat body repair for the professional bass fishermen and has a few contracts for motorcycle trailer and sidecar companies. If there would be enough people interested I would like to come up with a design for a lip like the one I have pictured and have him create the mold and produce some of the lips. What I would probably do is come up with a design of some sort, then have him create the mold and build it, then start taking orders. I want this to be reasonably priced and would have to find out what cost we would be looking at for the people that want them. I just want to make sure that there are other people who would be interested. If there already is a great lip out there at a good price that I don't know about, let me know, maybe my idea is dumb. Thanks

The R package lip can still be purchased for $150 shipped from dealers like Trussville Mazda and Rosenthal Mazda. I would also guess that your fiberglass lip will be less durable than the factory lip. I think if you can arrive at a price point that reflects these 2 points, you can definitely have a winner on your hands. I would definitely be interested as long as it doesn't deviate far from the stock lip design.

a thicker, lower, beefier, like stock lip would be ok...around $100 should be a winner and sell like hot cakes

Garage Vary lips go for 150 all the time and look similar to oem thats "slightly more dramatic"
Attachment 214966 Im sure if you got it under 100 bucks there would be much interest. But the oem R package lip is quite durable and alot of people like that. |

Maybe this only applies to the people in hilly areas but The reason I chose factory over the GV or any other brand is because it is ABS plastic and will bend if scraped or hit against something. Fiberglass will crack and splinter and is just about the worst think to have on the bottom of your car. How I wish it wasnt so, I hate factory parts....

I think the r-pack lip looks better then the GV one.
Bunch more durable too. I have an r-package one on my 94. |
+1 for R package lip. I also got the TDR splitter with it, looks nice :)

Auto Konexion has a really cool one. I wanted it for my NB but it was a bit short on the side for it. Its pretty dope..

my Garage Vary lip is Urethane just like the factory air dam.

There's a guy making fiber front and rear pieces that look like R-package stuff that failed at dieting. It's a bit more bulbous than the original, I'll see if I can find it. I believe the guy is Aussie.

I bought a carbon fiber one off another member on another Miata forum for $150. I kept bumping it on bad dips and some speed bumps. It never cracked. But the finish got pretty beat up, so I painted it semi gloss black so that it would be easy to touch up after every scrape.
Here is a pic of my front lip. Attachment 214950 Attachment 214951 |
http://www.ratsback.com/ is who I was thinking of, sorta. turns out this isn't the Kiwi (d'oh, sorry for the confusion). The Kiwi guy is making fiber replicas of the OEM, http://www.mx5mart.co.nz/db.cgi?db=m...iew_records2=1

I don't like the rounded edges of the ebay one that is carbon fiber. I like something with a more defined edge
