Front Splitters

Is there any reason to buy a custom APR (or other) carbon fiber front splitter when one made DIY could do the same job? I could see one being made for cheap out of aluminum (or possibly wood for those frugal enough), and save money by not buying a carbon fiber shovel.

Braineack 01-15-2009 06:12 PM

one could save money buying track dog racings splitter...

a CF splitter would be lightweight yet very rigid and strong. Go buy a sheet of 4x4' ABS and cut out one yourself...

This one may do something.

Here is a good thread, but you may not want to click on it because you apparently have something against mustangs. :jerkit:

well the only ones that track dog has for NA's look kind of poopy I forgot about SCC's miata, and I have that issue

I suppose I can muscle my way through that article, as longs as it doesn't give me tetanus

Not wide enough. You need a 4x8 sheet to get the full width of the car, and the cheapest I've found .250" ABS is nearly $100 for a 4x8 sheet. I have a 12mm piece of birchwood in my garage I am going to play with.

I would also bring the splitter 4" out from the bumper at minimum, possibly up to 6". A frame like Matt Andrews uses is probably required.

Efini~FC3S 01-15-2009 07:32 PM

I bought a 4x8 piece of 0.125" ABS for $55. I'm pretty sure the 0.250" from the same place wasn't much more expensive.

Yeah, I can get a 4'x8' sheet of 1/4" ABS for $67.85 through one of the suppliers at work. It is pebbled on one side and smooth on the other. It is what I made my radiator air guide out of as in the pic below (old pic w/ 1.6 still in).

That's about right for me too. I bought a sheet for my DIY fan shroud. I've cut a basic shape for a splitter from it but haven't done anything about mounting or refining it yet. Too lazy.

Chris Swearingen 01-15-2009 09:01 PM

If you angle them on the sheet you can get two that extend from 6" in front of the bumper to the center line of the front wheels out of one 4x8 sheet. But as others have said, you can not get one out of a 4x4 sheet.

Moral of the story: Find a friend, or have a spare.

I've seen that shit in person, its the most hardcore shit I've seen in my life.

mazda/nissan 01-16-2009 09:16 AM

how does SCC get the flexibility they need to adjust it with the front bolted to the car so rigidly?

needs more thinking outside of the box:

that's a full 55" wide and 16" tall IIRC.

It is hardcore. FWIW, Matt doesn't use that mounting setup anymore. He's simplified it significantly.

PWNed! Ouch.

This thread and Savington's wing has me working on my car again. Damn. My car is already a heavy pig with every option possible, all intact. Add the turbo kit, roll bar, frame rails, additional bracing, 225's on 15x8 6uls, godspeed rad and now a wing and splitter. It's going to be 150-200 lbs heavier than stock! Aaaagh!

I'm going to have the worlds first 3000lb Miata.:bang:

Needs more undertray. I want to bring the back of the splitter all the way back to the front of the front subframe, or possibly beyond that. I also want to incorporate a 6" splitter; how big was the splitter you have in those templates?

Chris Swearingen 01-16-2009 01:56 PM

Mine runs from the center of the front wheels to 6" in front of the bumper and is 30.5" front to back.

splitter is probably only 3" but there's wiggle room for surez.

Hardest part about this is finding a lift to use while fabbing the splitter, test fitting and fabbing the supports/mounts etc. because if you've ever tried making one with the car on a floor jack you'll know it's near impossible to do laying on your back with your nose inches from the car.

Braineack 01-17-2009 04:59 PM

Luckily I just traced a TDR Racing splitter so I have the template I need :P

Then I was smart enough to digitalize it :P

fc10a3 01-19-2009 01:49 AM

sweet my next diy
thanks for the digi template
