Garrett turbo identification

How do I identify my turbine? There's a metal plate on the center section but it doesn't have anything I can deciper as a model number. Is the raised lettering on the compressor housing the only way?

Braineack 08-30-2008 12:44 PM

attach picture. measure wheels. read the numbers on the inside of the compressor outlet and turbine inlet.

quadmasta 08-30-2008 12:45 PM

Car's still cooling down. I figured I'd strip all of the stuff off of the compressor inlet/outlet and take some pictures then.

This is why I think I need to rebuild the turbo. There's a TON of oil in the intake tract before the turbine but I just realized that there's a vac line that goes from the valve cover to this part. Wouldn't that be a HUGE way to suck oil out of the cam area and put it into the compressor?

Wow, you can't see that plate at all and I can't seem to get a good picture of it.

RotorNutFD3S 08-30-2008 01:37 PM

The numbers on that plate are important. If you can decipher them, google the number you come up with, and that usually leads you to the turbo you have. Or search them on Garrett's website. The numbers you need are typically in this format: 466541-1

looks like an old BEGi kit form those pictures.... most likely a GT28 (a GT2560 journal bearing equivalent)

quadmasta 08-30-2008 01:59 PM

It is an old BEGi kit. The installation manual says it's version 4.2. The PO said there was an offering for a "small ball bearing" turbo and a "large ball bearing" turbo and he got the smaller one. I think he was referring to bearing size, not turbine size.

Should I cap that vac line on the turbine inlet and put a breather on the valve cover? It seems to be the entry point for the oil.

Braineack 08-30-2008 02:02 PM

then it's probably a GT2554R.

take a picture of said line from further away and make the image 800x600.

The one with the big red arrow :)

Braineack 08-30-2008 05:03 PM

that's correct. if it's a source of the oil then you have blow-by issues or a bad pcv valve.

where's your IC pipe?

quadmasta 08-30-2008 05:10 PM

The charge pipe is laying on the workbench. I just replaced the PCV valve the other day. Maybe I'll try replacing it again.

Is there a surefire way to test it?

quadmasta 08-31-2008 12:15 PM

I pulled the rest of the IC piping and the IC itself. There was a lot of oil in all of it. Looks like I'm in for a rebuild. Freakin great.

Braineack 08-31-2008 02:23 PM

you need to determine if it's coming form the turbo or breather line first.

quadmasta 08-31-2008 02:59 PM

If it was coming from the turbo, it wouldn't make its way forward from the inlet, would it?

How can I determine that? Install a catch can?

Braineack 08-31-2008 03:10 PM

is there oil in the intake pipe before the turbo? or only on the outlet pipe?

In the picture above, here's where the oil was puddled.

zoom2zoom 08-31-2008 03:53 PM

If you disconnect the line, where do you think the oil will go next? That's right, all over the engine bay!! Did you replace the pcv valve with a cheap Checker piece or the GTX OEM unit?

quadmasta 08-31-2008 03:54 PM

Cheap piece, wasn't Checker though. Whatever Advance carries. Nearest dealer is an hour away.
