Default Idea for paint work

I want to repaint my car. Same color, just fresh paint. I am trying to do this and not break my piggy bank. I want to do this right and remove every possible molding and trim piece. To do the windshield frame right i need to remove the windshield. That is at least 250 dollars if the windshield does not break. If it breaks i will pay close to 500. Thats how much my paint job is going to cost.

So i have an idea. Instead of removing the windshield i am going to paint the car Mariner blue and will cover the windshield frame with a very hight quality 3M vinyl. Now i need to figure out what color i want. Its impossible to do it in Mariner blue so i want to either do Silver, Black or very good quality carbon fiber vinyl. Now dont call me ricer. 3M makes a very good carbon fiber looking vinyl that will look black from far away but close up will look 3D and have carbon fiber look.

Here is the link to the vinyl i am talking about.

3M Di-NOC Carbon Fiber Vinyl : Carbon Fiber Gear

Has anyone painted their windshield surround different color?

Black is the way to go, even if its nice looking carbon fiber it would still look rice ish in my opinion

I don't know how good that SPECIFIC carbon fiber "vinyl" looks, but a few years ago a bought a few sheets of similar stuff for a different car, and when it came I was shocked at how ugly it looked in real life.

Good luck.

Damn tyte socal dope. LOL Ricer^^^ I would kill for that trunk lid.

OP, I think the carbon fiber vinyl would look realy cool as long as it's a subtle dry carbon look. I definately would see this looking great on a hardtop.

Holy crap, at that price I might pick up some myself.

Well if this stuff is as good as advertised then when you get some take REALLY good pictures and do a thorough writeup on this stuff.

Yeah the vinyl is a dry carbon look. Plus it's textured so it should feel like it's real carbon.

I will. I will get a piece no matter what. I will wrap my laptop in it. And if it looks good some interior parts. I know for a fact that 3m makes awesome stuff. This stuff should be good 48"x24" is like 130 bucks.

You don't have to take the windshield off to paint it properly.

3m makes a masking tape with a firm edge that lifts and pulls back the edge molding allowing paint to get under it. I used it when I painted my old NA. Works great.

3Mâ„¢ Trim Masking Tape, 06349, 50.8 mm x 10 m, 6 per case

3M™ Trim Masking Tape, 06349, 50.8 mm x 10 m, 6 per case

10 mm wide hard band designed to actually lift up the molding from the vehicle, allowing paint to flow under the molding. This tape works particularly well on flush mount windshield and back glass moldings.

Full Description »

The 10 mm firm strip of this tape is slid under the molding. The liner on the remaining adhesive side is then removed and the tape is folded over and adhered to the glass, actually lifting up the molding and allowing paint to flow under it. This tape saves time, labor, and the cost of removing and installing new moldings, plus the removal of paint lines on existing moldings.
