Going FI on my mk1
 

Hi all,

Hope this is the right place to put this, im new!

I currently drive a 1999 NB MX5 and will be selling as I have a NA coming from Japan.

When I get the NA I will be looking to turbo it in the near future.

Basically, Im looking for advice!!

Its very clean with only 50k on the clock and im aiming for 200-210bhp at the wheels.

I know nothing when it comes to this so anything can only help.

Whats the best kit?

What kind of prices am I looking at?

Any problems I should know about?

Blah blah blah.......

Alot of the people on here are very good mechanics and engineers IMO. They do DIY turbo kits which not everyone can do. I know I probably couldn't make a very good setup. If you want something just ready to go without much stress I'd go with either www.flyinmiata.com or http://www.bellengineering.net/

They both sell turbos for your car and are both very nice. I have a turbo kit from flyinmiata and it is wonderful. GL

What is with all these new guys asking the same questions lately? It seems everyone is asking the same general question. I don't mean to be a dick, I'm just wondering why we have so many new people all of a sudden?

I have a feeling it happens every spring.

go through braineacks faq's which are in the diy section. Read around and get a general understanding of how the turbo system works if you dont already know. Then maybe take a look at what sort of systems people are running and how it has worked for them. IMHO, for a turbo system dont even mess with a greddy if you are serious at all. If I were to do it again, i would have gotten the bell manifold/turbo/downpipe that I have, but would have gone somewhere else for the intercooler piping and possibly gone with t3 flanges.

...........why would one want to import a NA from Japan? i was under the impression that they aren't hardly any different then an USDM version. Got to much money and want to deal with head aches from customs????

We are seeing a lot of the JDM cars here in Canada. They are generally quite cheap and fairly low milage. But you don't know what condition they are, so it's a crap shoot. AND you end up with a car with the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car. Also a lot of them seem to be automatics, for whatever reason.

Hell yeah! Springtime makes everyone want to be rolling around in a bad ass car..............

+1 on taking some time and reading brain's diy faq, and all of the stickies in the diy forum.

That sticky will give you an idea of what you're getting into and will give you a bunch more questions that will need to be answered to make yourself confident enough to dive in turboing your car. So once you get all those new questions from reading the sticky, do some serious searches and then ask away with an informed stance and there will be many many people on this forum who will hook you up with the answers you need.

I have a NB 1.8iS right now but have always prefered the NAs. By getting one from Japan it will have little or no rust and have wee bits British cars dont. Cause everyone knows how awesome British weather is :td:

You're fucking lying or you suck at searching. Your questions are so basic, you could plug them into google.com and get the answers. I had answers to ALL your questions before I even decided to buy a Miata or posted a word on this board.

The answer you will get on this is that it's personal preference. You may as well ask people what the best color Miata is.

What kind of prices am I looking at?

I found FM and BEGI on google before I even knew about this board, you can get a ballpark for comprehensive kits in various stages on their sites. Then there's the Greddy, you can't even put "turbo miata" into google without finding info on the Greddy kit.

Any problems I should know about?

Oh fuck dude. If you're an idiot you're going to have lots of problems. If you're not then you won't. It's all just standard performance problem solving- how to get more air, then consiquently fuel and finally controlling it all. There are hurdles. Kit's take care of this but they don't have the $/hp ratio that a DIY setup will have. Also you must be aware of the limitations of the components with which you will use, that's also available on this board.

I'll advise you on a consulting basis for $65 an hour, other guys here may charge more. Otherwise you're going to have to read the FAQs and search this board and google. It's easy and it's free.
