To Good of a deal to pass up?

Well, a friend of a friend just opened up his own Garage, pretty clean, two lifts, etc. He is ASE certified and would fix shit if he broke it (lol...:nono: )

Since I'm a good friend of our mutual friend, he said he would change my clutch and all the nifty seals, rear main, f&r tranny, clutch & flywheel for $125.

I'd prolly hang around to make sure things were don't decently...but thats next to nothing, I had a 'speed shop' say around $500. I just think this guy is trying to get his name out...I mean, its a clutch job...it can't be that complicated can it? I just don't think I have the time to take a whole weekend to replace mine right now.

VRTSid 03-17-2007 10:18 PM

I did my last clutch/rear main job last time and I'll never do it again. if I got someone to do it for 125? fuuuck I'd do it right now.

its not complicated and not really that hard, but its a bitch, and takes a while on your back on jackstands.

Rage_Kage 03-18-2007 01:36 AM

yea dude thats a pretty sweet deal

miatamania 03-18-2007 01:48 AM

I mean...if he isn't retarded...he can't exactly fuck up a clutch job?

Rage_Kage 03-18-2007 02:02 AM

if hes is infact ase certified you should be alright. those tests are not easy. and besides a clutch job is relatively simple

y8s 03-18-2007 11:35 AM

just make sure you read up on it first... if you see him do something wrong, just say something. you can always bring the manual if he wants to peek.

Mach929 03-18-2007 11:43 AM

125 is damn cheap, he's going to be losing his ass on that job.

1991BRG 03-18-2007 11:53 AM

Even if it $125 plus parts, that is a great deal.

griplimited 03-18-2007 10:31 PM

yeah. 125 is a great deal. i'd rather sit at work to earn the money to pay it off then do that again.

miatamania 03-18-2007 11:01 PM

hmmm...he might not be certified yet...just talked to my friend again.

He said he is good, but still, I dunno if I want him touching it if he is not certified...

Trent 03-18-2007 11:35 PM

having just changed the clutch myself on my dad's miata, hell yeah i would gladly pay someone $125 to do that job.

griplimited 03-19-2007 02:51 AM

certified or not. as long as he done it before and understands the concept. cant go wrong. just when he returns your car, make sure you check fluids and no missing bolts and you'll be good. lol.

zoom2zoom 03-19-2007 04:07 AM

I can swap a tranny in about 2 hours on jackstands, done it enough to be efficient, so he should be able to do it faster with a lift. I say pay him, working under a Miata sucks, but only if he is completely comfortable doing the work.

TwoScoopsofHooah 03-19-2007 04:39 AM

Your buddy probably passed the ASE tests....but in order to "certified" you have to have documented 2 years experience and send that to ASE in order to get the patch...I've been ASE master certified for 5 years now. I've seen some great technicians that aren't ASE certified. Its a clutch job...if he has a shop and can't do it he has no business having a shop. So I guess the fact that he has a shop says something. 125 is a steal...worst thing that could happen is thta you have to do it over again.. I'd go for it.

VRTSid 03-19-2007 11:25 AM

well if your friend is just charging labor (what it sounds like) and is giving you the friend price. and yeah if hes a decent mechanic a clutch job is easy.

hell I did it and I cant wire fog lights.

Not true. If he is really good he can probably easily do it in an hour. Providing shit doesn't break of course. A friend of mine who owns his own shop and is a long time Mazda tech did mine in about 45 minutes.

On the other hand he could end up being into it for a day if things go wrong!

miatamania 03-26-2007 11:16 AM

Well I talked to him, said he'd never worked on a miata, but how hard could it be since it was a standard FR drive car lol. He swapped out a tranny last night in my friends lowrider truck in about 3 hours including the time to cut out and reweld the 'custom skid plate' he had.

Told me it would take about 4 hours being careful so next time I have time off I'll take him up on it.

I talked to my friend who recommended him and he said he has always let him work on his cars and this kid is picky as shit.

VRTSid 03-26-2007 11:36 AM

My mechanic swapped a clutch in a ae86 in 45 min from ground->lift-> ground. (on our sunday shop day)

Im sure your mechanic will do great, 4 hours labor for 125 sounds really really weird though. sounds like hes going to fit you in in between other jobs.

my mechanic does that for my(and friends) cars, he'll take it for a day and just work on it in between customers.

miatamania 03-26-2007 11:53 AM

He just guessed 4 hours. Said it prolly wouldn't take that long. I'd imagine that'd be what he is doing.
