Got head?

1. :bigtu: to Tom at PartsGroup for a heckuva deal on an 01 head. You wankers should be nice to him, it might pay off.

2. :td: to lazzer. I'll spare him the "eat me lazzer" thread but yer a putz for sitting on two cylinder heads for effing ever!

3. I'm gettin a 2001 head to build! woooooooooot. :yippee:

Guess I'll be doing some research on DIY porting over the next few months. And junk like that.

neogenesis2004 09-10-2007 11:17 AM

hellz yes, cheers to faster spool

Braineack 09-10-2007 11:29 AM

who's doing the valve job?

cjernigan 09-10-2007 11:33 AM

Tom has hooked me up with good parts when in need. Best part is I usually get them the next day via DHL. He's just under 4 hrs from where I am in TN i think. I'd like to make it out to one of his dyno days sometime.

Splitime 09-10-2007 11:44 AM

I've had nothing but great transactions with Parts Group and Tom.

no clue yet. somewhere awesome?

Braineack 09-10-2007 02:43 PM

the guy that milled my head is said to have three nationaly ranked miatas that he built the engines for.

y8s 09-10-2007 03:22 PM

incidentally, Tom pre-cleans and checks the heads for flatness as part of his standard fare. dont think he's doing valve jaerbs tho.

cjernigan 09-10-2007 03:28 PM

Actually i'm pretty sure he builds some mean heads. Here is one of this for sale listings:
"Cylinder Heads
90-93 Bare Heads.Presure Tested.Good Thickness. Can Build To Suit Your Needs. From Stock To Wild!"
Might be a one stop shop for you.

My old boss is Ron (owner) at M2 Race Systems.

http://www.m2race.com/index.asp

A hellva guy and interested in doing a Miata head, but has yet to do one (I'm too slow). He should be able to do a valve job no problem. If you have a good port he can digitize it and reproduce it, he's got those fancy 5 axis CNCs.

I'm not sure what his prices are either.

Ben 09-11-2007 09:32 AM

oooo those 5 axis machines are sooo cool.
man I wish I could go to my mill and machine out some pimp wheels out of a chunk of aluminum.

i admit i'd be hesitant to give it to a shop that's never done it before... would he do it for free plus reimburse the cost of the head if he fuxxed it up? :D

TurboTim 09-11-2007 11:46 AM

Valve job, yes probably as that's not anything head-specific. Port work, no.

I have a spare '94 head I was gonna let him play with but figured it'd be cheaper to find a 99+ head like you. How much was it?

I vote for Bob at Fairfax Auto Parts, he seemed very knowledgeable and does SCCA miata engine builds all the time.

i dont want to go giving away his low price, but it's much less than the price on their website. but not cheaper than lazzer's $150 heads from god knows where.

a reliable source for a 3-angle would be good.

Rebello in Antioch.

They do spec miatas, as well as Touring Car BMW's. Popstoy on miataforum, and Scott Maclean, got >160 whp NA. In Scott's case, this was with the stock '94 intake, and he plans to turbo.

They charged me $800 for my 6-cylinder M3 head, for a valve job + head work. Result is +30 cfm flow (+15%), which is good for +45hp on a 6-cyl.

I then sent my cams to Dema Elgin www.elgincams.com
He will take the flow numbers from Rebello and do a custom grind. $450.

Call Dema and chat with him about what profiles would work on a VVT head.

y8s 09-12-2007 04:25 PM

I was actually pondering doing something similar to what you did as far as DIY port jobs go. It's definitely not $800.... :)

do you still have your collection of educational materials for DIY porting?

Braineack 09-12-2007 04:31 PM

Matt, that shop I used said a valve job would start at $250 for labor.

Dhaark 09-12-2007 06:11 PM

I'm sending Tom @ Parts Group my car over the winter.... just to have the head done. :) should be just around..... oh, well... I won't say how much it will cost. lol
And he is a great guy to deal with. Has great prices, parts and service. Sometimes he spends an hour just to tell you which valves are better and why over the other ones. :)

paul 09-12-2007 06:13 PM

2 99 heads. i wish i could get one worked. such is life.

I'll trade you a '94 head I got for someone and a fancy coolant reroute for one of your '99 heads and intake.

Shit I'm so close to finishing my intake manifold. Oh well. haha.

y8s 09-13-2007 09:02 PM

for a stock head, the casting is very clean. what's a guy to do.

cjernigan 09-13-2007 09:18 PM

Guess all i can do is hope mine is that pretty.

lazzer408 09-13-2007 09:27 PM

I only have one head. I didn't buy the other one yet. Part of another deal with an engine. (long story)

That's it. It was a head from a running engine that I found AFTER I bought the one from Nester that UPS fukt up. If this head was trashed I would need the one from the running engine. If this head was fine I was going to let y8s have the other one for $150 to be cool but I wan't going to let him have it out from under me if I needed it. I'm sick of being thrashed on this forum. I help out doing shit like this. I don't make money. I don't get anything out of it. You can all show some general respect or go F--- yourselfs.

:inout:

neogenesis2004 09-13-2007 09:34 PM

WTF are you talking about, he didn't say anything bad about you right there. Go buy a fucking sense of humor.

dude, he offered his head up for sale over a month ago. and you said you had a lead on another one for cheap back then.

when stuff sells for cheap and is a good deal IT SELLS FAST. That's why I got annoyed that nothing happened for six weeks.

I thought I was pretty easy on you in this thread. I kept all my pestering to PMs and found my own cylinder head. But from time to time people take a ribbing from everywhere at once. You'll get to your breaking point and flounce out of here and realize it's all irrelevant because you're going to build shit how you want to build shit and buy shit when you want to buy shit and NOT CARE what we say. Thanks for the coils though...

A sense of humor is one thing but when I get shit day after day it gets old. y8s didn't know what deal I had worked out for the other head. I offered it to him at what it was going to cost me. I know these heads are not cheap. I was going to relay the deal IF this head from Nester was ok. If not I would have needed it for my own build. Were still in limbo about what UPS is going to do about it. Plus I'm still waiting to hear about that other engine/head anyways. I haven't heard from that guy in weeks. It's not like I can just walk to Walmart and get it or like I'm hoarding heads in my closet. Sorry to go off about it it's just that I can only take so many 'rib shots'.

keep tellin us to stfu. and maybe one or two of us will. probably not loki though :gay:

also beer and sex can help relieve the ribbing.

TurboTim 09-14-2007 09:40 AM

Oh I can go for some beer and sex. Maybe next week.

patsmx5 09-14-2007 10:15 PM

Hey, If you need some pointers on head work let me know. I did A LOT of work to the head on my 99 and it really helped. I unshrouded the combustion chambers, blended the bowls into the throat and combustion chambers, polished the valves, mild porting, etc. The motor has the power 2k. it used to have at 3K.

Sounds like a good plan. Flowed head and cam to match. Cam price isn't bad.

An inexpensive way of upping rev range on that head is to use 94/95 Miata valve springs. They are a little stiffer than the 99+ valvesprings.
