Hankook RS-3 225/45/15

Tire Rack is taking pre-orders for these tires at $124/tire. Call Tire Rack 1-800-428-8355 and get Rudy at ext. 664. They'll ship as soon as they receive them which should be within the next two weeks or so. Supposedly much better grip than the old RS-2, and aside from the gay flames in the tread, should make a great street/HPDE non-R compound tire. Not sure how they will work out for auto-x, but the RS-2s were a great street tire that didn't get too greasy on the track like Azenis.

Disclaimer: I don't work for nor own stock in either Tire Rack or Hankook, but I did just order a set.

I am working on exploiting a lead that might develop into discounted RS3s with a guy who buys other lines of 'kook tires for commercial vehicles. Will advise.

levnubhin 04-23-2009 01:07 PM

That would be awesome. $124 is high IMO.

Ben, I'm definitely interested in the RS-3s. The RS-2 was the only tire I could find in 224/45-15 that has a 200 tread wear. Hopefully the RS-3 is the same.

kingofl337 04-23-2009 02:14 PM

What would be the best rim to run with this sized tire?

levnubhin 04-23-2009 03:19 PM

8 or 9. 9 being best iirc.

they will fit just fine on 7" wheel. even 6.5" if you try hard enough.

Yeah, but how well would they perform?

more than likely a 215/45/16 like the RS-2

hustler 04-23-2009 04:25 PM

why not just buy R1R's for that price?

949Racing 6ULs 15x8 works for me.
My interest in these tires mainly lies with the fact they are the widest tires that comply with local track day classing rules for treadwear.

tann3r 04-23-2009 04:50 PM

I had these as a contender to save money by running street tires on the track. Unfortunately, these are more expensive that NT01s in the same size.

boileralum 04-23-2009 04:55 PM

$25 price increase FTL. You can get the 205 RE-11 for $4 less, and then after the $100 rebate Bridgestone is offering right now, it's pretty much a no-brainer. I like the RS-2s, but Hankook is missing the boat with the pricing on these.

This is interesting....

For the June 2009 issue. Just got my Grassroot motorsports where they did some Extreme tire testing. Tires were tested in 15 inch sizes on a hond civic.

Here is a summary of times from worst to first.

6th - Falken RT 615 Mean time: 35.302 Sec Quick time 35.125 Sec.
5th - Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec Mean time: 35.209 sec. Quick time 35.061
4th -Toyo Proxes R1R Mean time: 34.522 sec Quick Time 34.452 sec
3rd- Bridgestone RE-01R Mean time: 34.478 sec Quick Time 34.430 sec.
2nd- Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 Mean time: 34.266 Quick time 34.238 sec.
1st - Kumho ECSTA XS Mean time :34.170 Quick Time 34.030 sec.

All tires were shaved to 3/32 nd and test performed on an Autocross set up.

cueball1 04-23-2009 05:06 PM

Now if they'd make those top 3 tires in a 225 width for 15's. Too bad they didn't wait a month to have the rs3 in there.

Andy Hollis did the testing like 2 months ago, they have been pestering him on m.net and sccaforums about the results, I bet he is relieved to not have to keep silent now.

super stiff V710s work on the factory wheels, but I dont think a regular street tire would work well at all

Pitt 04-23-2009 06:21 PM

I just got 01 NB wheels that came with new Hankook ventus hr2 tires size 215/40/16, and I like them, they have decent grip. They must be a light tire because my wheels now weigh 1 lbs less than my daisies did with 185/60/14 toyo's.

I ran 225/45/15 RS2s on 6.5" wheels on my Civic that I sold to buy the miata and they worked very well, other than in ponding water on the interstate during a torrential downpour. They autocrossed alright in damp conditions, and did pretty well in the dry too, though I still preferred running my Hoosiers.

Yeah, I thought so too until I was unable to find any RE-11s in stock anywhere in the same size. I know Tire Rack also is pushing the RE-11 and other Bridgestone tires, but stock left is either zero or <4 tires. Not much currently available in 225/45/15, even though lots of tire makers have planned on that size.

cueball1 04-23-2009 08:03 PM

Gruppe S claims they will be the 1st reseller to have the RS3's. No pricing from them yet.

Woo, Andy liked them (EcstaXS) for our local track as well. Wish they made a 225 though, might consider some 6UL's.

i talked to andy about this at airport and he had me sold on the r1r. I still want an all-season for street rubber though.

Meh, all season rubber in TX is :giggle:

You've already got the NT-01's for the track right?

Chris

Chris

well, I have a set of unused 205/50/15's that I need to sell if my 15x9's make it in time for TDR@MSR.

I don't want to run expensive rubber on the street with 2* camber in the rear with 1/8" tow-in.
