Default Intercooler

With A/C installed, anyone think it is possible to fit an intercooler with the dimensions of 24" wide, 11" tall, and 3.5" thick? The thickness is what I am not sure about.

total dimension or core? core no, but either way, you sure as hell dont need it that thick...

not a chance. its huge, that's gotta equate to a near 1000hp intercooler.

the biggest you'll fit is what i picked up at cxracing.com. 24x12x3 total, 18x12x3" core. Most here started running the 18x12x3 total, 11x12x3 core that I used to run, even that little thing is plenty big for most setups. A lot of guys pick up a thin 6x24x3" core intercoolers that fit under the a/c dryer and completely fill the mouth. My best advice is to cutout a template in cardboard of the intercooler you want and see if it will fit.

honestly, you want the smallest intercooler that can get the job done. intercoolers suffer from deminishing returns, if the small one can cool 80%, the larger one might only cool 83%. while the one you linked may only cool 84%.

but you want to put this on a miata not an evo. What your set up anyways? must be on a lot of boost to want one thats 24x11x3.5

Corky did a lot of testing. and he's determined that a core of 18-20 has done it's job fully. where a 21", 22", even 30" long intercooler will not cool the charge any more significant amount.

then keep in mind increasing core thickness does not proportionally increase heat transfer capability. Each increment of core thickness will receive hotter cooling air. 3" in itself is plenty thick. Then you get into drag, and and it makes it harder for air to pass, and especially harder for the radiator to do it's job.

It's all compromise, but Corky will say that you want 6-7 square inches of internal flow for every 100HP.

internal flow area =
length of runner x height of runner x # of runners

11x12x3" core:
11 x .125 x 16 = 22 in²
22/.06 = 366BHP

18x12x3" core:
18 x .125 x 16 = 36 in²
36/.06 = 600BHP

18"x7"x2.5" core
18x.125x10=22.5"
22.5"/.06=375BHP

Scott, does this look right, or where did you get the .06 from?

100hp / 6 sq. in. = .06 makes the math simpler.

well, one thing to consider is that we don't get very good airflow to any portion of the IC that isn't in the "mouth"

when i was doing my install, i noticed a decent amount of the top of the IC is hidden behind the bumper cover. based on that, i would think a shorter but longer core would be more efficient for our application, assuming the same surface area calculation.

zabac's 7" tall core in all likelihood > my 12" tall core...

Ok, back on, so, my application is for a T3 Setup, MS, 3" entire exhaust, engine rebuilt obviously, and goal is 22 psi, working way up from 1 psi to 14 psi, eventually want to hit the 22 goal. But I want to buy the best of everything so it lasts as I piece and part together my setup. I imagine 350 rwhp would be around top. So I want a good flowing intercooler, preferably 3" inlet and outlet on it too. I would like to know what the maximum dimensions of something I can shove in there considering I have A/C and PS.

You do not need 3" inlet/oulets for 350hp. The standard 2.5 that ebay intercoolers use will be fine, and the pipes will be easy to route.

But wouldn't 3" piping provide better flow? I want the faster spool up and most hp I can get. Would this be a good intercooler? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JVT-F...spagenameZWDVW

lets say you make 300rwhp. then you need pipes that can flow about 450cfm...2.5" pipes can flow 600cfm....


Larger tubes only add volume, not extra flow.

If you're looking for internal flow area, you have to look at the cross-sectional flow area, and not the frontal area. So..."length of runner" wouldn't come into play for the internal flow area rule of thumb...only for a cooling efficiency approx.

looks too big...
a 18x12x3 is more than you will ever need
also 3" pipes are useless for anything thats been ever made on a miata, don't reinvent the wheel
2.5" piping is plenty

i had the IC i linked fit on an NB with AC, well and PS if it matters any
bigger than that, you will have to go up where you will not get any airflow...

if that were the case, then both the intercoolers would be the same on paper, since they both have 16 runners and are both 3" thick.

one thing i do think i did wrong was the runner size of 1/8", look more like 10mm.
