Harness / Harness bar Questions
 

Hate to beat a dead horse but I'm having trouble finding answers to all my questions in searching mt.net/m.net/groogle..


Eventually I plan to track my car as time permits but will be street driven also. The car has a Hard Dog M2 Hardcore hardtop double diag bar with 'harness tabs' installed along with Corbeau Forza seats and have procured some G-Force 5 point harnesses.

1. Can I use those harness tabs or should I buy a harness bar?
2. Do I need a harness bar to even use the tabs?
3. Can the lap belts be bolted to the factory lower mounting locations via the eyebolts or should I drill them into the floor under the seat?
4. Where would be the best place to mount point number 5? Should it be directly below the camlock, slightly behind or ahead?

I ran out of questions...

1. No first hand experience, but intrawebz knowledge says yes.
2. Again, no first hand, but my understanding is harness bar OR tabs both not needed
3. Yes, factory locations work perfectly fine, assuming they position belts well with your seat
4. Preferably straight down or slightly behind the camlock. Straight down or slightly forward is usually the best for comfort.

A ton of folks have more knowledge than me on this topic. But here goes anyway...

1: You can use the harness tabs if you want. But the bar will be better. The tabs are illegal for many groups but should be fine for local track days put on by local folks (not SCCA).

2: You use EITHER the harness bar or the tabs. They're different ways of attaching the same items (shoulder straps). With the bar, you wrap the straps around it. With the tabs, you'll need some clip ends to attach the straps with.

3: Lap belts should go through eyelets bolted through the floor behind the seats with the steel backing plates around them. Attach them with clips.

4: for the 5 point, I've no experience. I like a 6 point just because it makes mounting so much easier. I attach the crotch strap to the lower seat belt mounting bolt and the bolt hole on the tranny tunnel. Then I route the belt either under my legs, parachute-style for a seat with no center hole or through the appropriate hole on a real race seat.

You do not want to do this, the crotch strap should go straight down with minimal horizontal travel. It needs its own mounting point(s) and definitely should not be attached to the same eyes as the lap belts or to the front seat mounting bolts.

Sub belt should be the only eyebolt with a huge washer behind it. 3x3 plate is suggested I think with a hole in it.

You can re-use the lap belt threads, but don't use eye bolts, just bolt it up like stock. That is of course if your buckle side is bolted to the transmission, I believe some are bolted to the seat?

Wrap the shoulder belts, use the hasps for the lap belt, bolt-down the nut-strap with big washers. Eye bolts suck because you'll have to drill and wire the hasps.

I once failed yearly tech by using my factory seatbelt bolts for my lap belts. I had to do the eye bolt with 3x3 backing plate thing for them. :( It sucked. This was for solo2 also. lol

I've never been in trouble for this. Should I change things?

Probably not. I can't imagine the eyelets are any better than the factory belt points. And this was a long time ago, back when my region first got yearly tech.
