Harness questions
 

I just picked up a bolt in harness bar for my roll bar, and now I need to figure out a good harness to get. I am eventually going to get new seats as well(probably sprint 5), but for now I am just going to use the stock ones until I have the $.

So what harness' are people using on here? Sparco shit is pretty pricey, but G-force racing harness seem pretty reasonable. And this will obviously be a 6-point because I would like the harness to actually do something in the event of a crash. Also this will probably be 3" because that seems to be the most common for cam lock 6-pointers.

Also, almost any 6-point I get will require backing plates and drilling into the floor and i-bolts correct? I really don't know much about the installation of harness, so any information/tutorials for miata harness' would be appreciated.

na just get the eylet bolts and put them in your stock seat bolt positions.

You'll need to drill and use large washers for the eyebolts when attaching the crotch straps though.

I have the cheap G-Force 5pt, it is a little annoying when you are in a hurry, but other than that it is ok by my standards. When I do it again, it will be camlock, I'm 100% sure of that.

So G-force is a good way to go? Are there other affordable, yet high quality harness' out there? 6-point camlock would definitely be my preferred package.

So there's no writeup on exactly how to install 6-point and which washers/backplates to use?

I have been running a lot of HPDE with PCA, which are about as picky on safety as any organisation gets. I have the G-force 3" and I think they work great.

To attach the side mounted belts, I just used the existing stock seat belt mounts and bolts. There are some extra washers there which you can replace with the mount for the harness.

For the sub belts I used the front 2 bults that attaches the seat to the floor. I ordered new bolts from McMastercar, but you do not really have to. I welded on a heavy steel ring vertically to the head of the bult and snapped on the harnesses to that. It gives a straight pulling force on the bult and allows the belts to move freely, as they should. There are finished bults with rings on (FM has them), but not of the right size, so you would have to drill and rethread the holes.

A friend of mine used longer bults and just sandwished the mounts for the sub belt between the bult head and the floor. But I do not recommend this and neither does G-force. I think there is some info on their webpage regarding how to install the harnesses.

And the angles of the sub belts are ok using the front seat belt bolts with the welded on rings? Could you post a picture just to show how you welded on the ring? It sounds a little ghetto the way I pucture it, but I think I am imagining a small weld which may not be what you are talking about.

Are you using the stock seat?

Oh and torkel, do you ever make it out to the Nurburgring? For a second I thought that was your location, but then I re-read it. Google maps says 3hrs 48 mins, if I were you I'd be there every second of my spare time!

Well, the angle is OK, but not really 100% correct. To get it 100%, you need an after market seat with a hole for the sub belts in the bottom. But it is close enough for some track days and DE IMO.

I can't send you a picture, sorry, because my car is about 1300km away in my dads garage. I asked one of the pros from our company modelshop to weld the bults for me, so I have no doubt about the quality. I would not do it myself... because I suck at welding.

As a matter of fact, I just had a weeks vacation and was visited by a friend from NC. We went to the Green Hell (of course) and took a few laps with my daily, a BMW 320i -99. It was just amazing. I have to post some pics later. The elevation changes is like nothing else I have ever driven on before.

So with a sprint the sub-belts mounted at the front seat bolts would be in the right place/angle? Is anyone else doing this? Has anyone done the whole backing plate/drilling deal?

And you don't even know how envious I am. I have to find a way to the 'ring in the next year or so.

A 6-point is more "comfortable" to wear, and will work since you can pass it throught the stock seat split.

ALso... get a cam lock if you can. They are much easier to get on and off, with a lot less fiddling. Important if you need to get out while in line @ autox already. <G>

I've got a 3" one, that a buddy was using for ralley.... works great over the years I've had it.

ALso note: some tracks, safety guys will look at the dates on your belts.... so depending on who you use it with, you might have to upgrade after x years too......

how about a 6 point harness in a seat with only a hole in the middle for a 5 point?
looking to get either a 5 or 6 point 3" Willans harness.

Buy a 6 point (better in a frontal impact)...can be used with the stock seat with NO problems as you actually sit on the sub-straps. Use a clip type lap belt so that you can remove it when you daily drive the car. Get wrap around shoulders and just drop them behind the seat when you daily drive the car. Any FIA belts will work. I prefer cam lock HOWEVER...in my rally car I have had them fail to latch and have had a shoulder pop out of the lock. I think for MOST folks the latch and link is better as it is either in or it aint! Also you can visually see if you got it. The cam lock has no way to check unless you really yank on them HARD.

OK, so as it stands.... the shoulder belts are tied onto the style bar (yeah I know.... Boss frog on order)... There's two big eye bolts where the stock seat belt bolts go. The lap belts clip on the eyes, and the sub belts are bolted to the car through them.

The sub belt for wearing is passed through the split in the seat.... the lap come around the seat, and the shoulders over the top.... that's it.

I run a RCI 5 point 3”, $70.00 from JEGS. I have the lap belt mounted to the stock seat belt mounting points. The shoulder restraints are mounted to my boss frog double hoop roll bar. Does anyone see any problems? It has the correct mounting stuff?

I'm being thick... So are people using I-bolts where the sock lap belts mount too, or do most people use the bolt in plates with the stock washers there?

And I think I get the sub belt mounting stuff, its pretty much use the seat mounting holes with i-bolts in them, or drill and use body washers if you put i-bolts slightly closer together to be in a better position.

Now I am going to start bothering people asking how to mount the sprint 5 seats...

Get some 1.8" thick 2" wide steel stock, bend the ends, drill some holes, thank me later.
