Headlight/fog light covers...opinions? Paint protection on the highway...

OK, I normally wouldn't even think about this stuff, but in a little over a month i'll be packing up and taking a 5k+ mile road trip that will include the Flyin' Miata Open House. We will be driving from Atlanta through Ala/Miss/La/Tx/NM/Col/Wyoming/Utah/Nev/Kan/Missouri/Ill/Ken/Tenn.
I'm a little worried about the road debris really taking a toll on the headlights and foglights and was thining about that translucent vinyl film. Has anyone tried this stuff around here? How well does it work? I've heard reports that it will deflect some serious debris.

Also, can anyone comfirm that simply driving out west with the sand/fine particulates on the roadway is hell on a car's finish/windshield?
Ok..and one last opinion.... do I get the clear..or do i get the blue? I'm kinda digging the light blue tint...think it would look pretty cool against the titanium...

Oh and for the bumper/hood/mirrors I plan on finding a similar color automotive vinyl and covering up the high-resistance areas...like what people do with blue tape OR I might see if I can find the clear vinyl and use that.

Well I can't comment on the headlights, but as for the paint. I believe 3M make a clear bar that you could use. You may want to look into that and see if it has an side effect on the paint.

I've looked into the clear 3M stuff... it's kinda expensive :(

go to your local decal/tint shop they should be able to make you a clear bra for the car.

go to an art store or autobody supply store and pick up some frisk paper. its cheap and its a clear adheasive that leaves no residue

Call Chris at Lamin-X there in ATL. They make precut covers for Miatas at decent prices.

I will warn you though, they're a real PITA to install. I had them on my 99.

And the blue tinted headlights are illegal in many of those states, not to mention that they are ghey and ricey. And the majority of your visual capability is in the yellow light range. It comes from living in the presence of a yellow sun for a million years. Go figure.

We have plenty of sand on the road here. And rocks. And it pits the hood, the windshield and the lights. Most of it comes from rock and sand hauling trucks around here. I've got seven rock chips in the windshield as we speak. The first one hit three days after I changed out the windshield last time. Lots of clear bra cars down here. Seems to work pretty well.

get the clear ones and if i was you i would just blue tape the whole bumper, fender, and hood....its cheap so you could take it off when you get there and just mask it again before you leave

This might sound ghetto, but why not just use clear packing tape? I have a Samsung slider phone that I used clear tape on for protection and it works great! First piece lasted 2 months before looking dull and that's with having it in my pocket at the salvage yard and working on one of my cars almost weekly. Any tape residue comes off quickly and safely with Goo Gone.
