Headlight Idea?
So I personally do not like having pop ups popped up all the time, and on my old MK1 MR2 I had driving lights (H4 high/low bulbs) installed in the turn signals to use in low light conditions (like a well lit street at night). So my question is... Is there any way to retro fit some projectors w/ HIDs behind the turn signal lens? This would mean relocating the turn signals to the driving lamp space. I think it would look cool, and you could sand and polish the lens to be smooth for better light output. You could also remove the regular pop ups to save some weight.

sweeeet, you just made my day. That is exactly what I was looking for.
|
Moving the oem bulb to the corner melted the lens a tad...even using a short glode bulb...I'd try swapping to one of those neato LED corner bulbs.
|
yeah, seems like heat is an issue, also I would probably get rid of the reflectors in the large housing and put in some Hella HID projectors. Just making plans for a car I don't have yet, currently I'm a NB guy.
|
Would you be able to aim that light? it seems that you would run the risk of flashing oncoming traffic which is not cool. Also to get the best results at least a rough aim is required. Just a thought. Looks really cool though.
|
you would probably have to stack ashim behind one of the securing screws to angle it.
|
A little off the topic but I just picked up a few sets of bulbs from www.powerbulbs.co.uk. They offer damn near free shipping to the US and buy one pair get one pair free on their house brand bulb. I just installed these http://www.powerbulbs.co.uk/product....For=&PT_ID=113
in my fiance's Scion Xb. The light is so white with 0 blue. They are the same wattage as the stock bulbs and were a huge improvement over the stock bulbs. Just thought I would share. I was so happy with them I bought a few more sets for myself and Christmas gifts. |

Is there a aftermarket lens made out of glass for the blinker light?
|
You mean replace the entire plastic assembly with a glass assembly? Why?
|
Pretty sure that writeup said that he isn't having any problems with the lense melting or deforming at all from heat so why would you want glass.
|
look for LED lights, maybe you can find something bright enough

This is my favorite version of this mod

Yeah, I just found that thread. If you used the factory lens and sanded/polished the inside it'd look really pimp. Too bad the PIAA's are $350 and that's money not spent to make the car faster. Maybe someday.

Unlike most bulbs, Power Plus is also filled with Xenon gas to deliver maximum performance without increasing the wattage of the product. |

http://www.ziptied.com/Coppermine/al...Headlights.jpg http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=202404 Yea thats my setup with the P-3000 headlights. Originally I did just as Tylerdurden suggested - I cut the front clear lens half off of the parking lights and used that as the front lens but I didn't like the lines in the lens and how opaque they were so I fabbed the clear acrylic lens as shown in that pic VRTSid posted. To address what Tylerdurden said about the PIAA's being $350 not going towards making the car faster I say phooey. This was one among several mods that all greatly affected the aerodynamics of the car. This mod allows full removal of the headlights and motors (25 lbs saved) as well as eliminates the barn doors during all night driving which saves gas mileage and greatly reduces drag. ust had to point that out. You can obviously imagine what the light looked like with the stock lens over it during the day time - it looked factory. Here's the only pic I have of the lights on with the factory lens over them... http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...37_23_full.jpg I wanted something that was an actual headlight not just something to use in lighted areas... works great. http://memimage.cardomain.net/member...37_22_full.jpg -Ryan |
thats gansta.

Hey, thepass, very nice looking car. Im diggin the wheels, the lights, mirrors, and headlight lid scoop. Not so much the bodykit since to me it looks to futuristic for a nostalgic car imo. That headlight mod is a very very good idea btw. You really took off 25lbs with that? wow is a good chunk and since it's way out front, thats a good place to loose it.

akaryrye - Thanks for the compliments. I'm a fan of newer styled cars and personally love more extreme looks like the Garage Vary widebody and stuff - I realize I stray from the classic look that so many love about the miata but for me it works. Plus designing/molding it all was a great oportunity to improve my fiberglass work.
Yes I pulled out 25 lbs - you would be surprised what the motors and metal structures that swivel up all add up to. The headlight scoop is made from ABS and is held up by light aluminum braces and the other factory lid is just the oem cover held up again by aluminum struts so the whole motorized headlight assembly is out. The PIAA's weighed maybe 5 lbs so I saved ~20 lbs. -Ryan |
it would be pretty sweet to somehow get the hood modified to take out the headlight lids altogher eh? I bet with a little bit of bending, seam welding, grinding and body filler it could be done

That could be pretty cool. In the thread on miata.net that VRTSid linked to, they talked about the possibility of eliminating the covers too. The hood turbopezz linked to is SICK - that would the ultra clean, and would save the most weight. However, I really wanted the headlight scoop I made because it will plumb directly into a cold air box for the turbo that is going in in the next 6 months... although hey, one could always modify the ISC hood.

Pass.... that's definately a sweet mod. <G> I remember seeing the picture, and thought... that's something to upgrade too.
Now, I've done the KT light mod... around 5 years ago now. <G> The 9006 fit OK, just remember to keep a spare around. They always seem to die when I'm on the way to the gap.... The side markers are just either little 914, or 916s... or you can upgrade to LEDs (which is what I'm going to do I think). I've added mine to the DRL circuit... to have them come on automatically, like they are supposed to. The only thing I wish, is the 9006 were "switched". I have been planning on getting up under the dash to add a factory cruise/fog switch, so I can use it to turn the 9006 off. Dave, |

Anyone want to buy a set of OEM turn signals? |
Splitime.... PM me, I might be interested. I had a spare set, but I think I donated one to another car.... And unfortunately mine have gotten some small cracks in the lens now, so I'd be interested.....
Dave, |
